May 12 2022 Observations. Nice western prominences!!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 14:40 until 16:30 UTC. The skies are mostly clear with fair/average seeing at first going to below average by sessions end. The temperature is 70F ( 21.1C ) at 16:00 UTC.

Coronado SolarMax II 90. SS & DS. 32x, 50x and 89x ( Ha )
I see eight active region plages in the 656.3nm Ha chromosphere today. Four in the northern hemisphere and four in the southern hemisphere.

Three small plages are seen in the NE quadrant. One is at the limb and AR13008 is the westernmost one according to my reference KSO image. Now at least I know which one AR13008 is! The third plage lies between AR13008 and the limb plage. One small plage is seen in the NW quadrant. It belongs to AR13009. A few filaments are seen scattered from east to west in the upper northern latitudes.

AR13006 is seen as an elongated plage in the SW quadrant. It's plage is not as bright as yesterday and I see no sign of flares. A big wide easy filament is seen to it's SW and two other thinner filaments to it's NW. The SE shows the bright plage of AR13007 and three spots. A line of broken filaments stretches west and southwest of AR13007. Two plages are seen near the SE limb. One is at the limb kicking up small surge prominences.

There are some nice prominences around the limb today, especially on the western limb. The SW limb has a prom I call " The Monster " when I first observed it it looked like a raggedy-headed monster peeking around the edge of the Sun with two eyes ( dark voids ) peeking just over the limb. As the session progressed the " Monster " decayed and the voids broke up spreading into smaller ones before almost disappearing altogether Fine details, striations, curls of plasma were all visible within this bright prominence. The NW limb has two decent ones as well. The northernmost one of these looked like a jumping frog at one point. The eastern limb also had a couple of proms. One looks like a splash. Did that monster throw something? Attached is an iPhone capture of the proms on the western limb. They don't even approach the sharpness of my visual views.

The mottles are visible without difficulty across the chromosphere today.

Celestron NexStar 102 GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm Baader filter. 55x and 62.5x ( WL )
I can see nine areas of activity on the 540nm photosphere today. Five of these contain spots!

In the northern hemisphere I see three facular patches in the NE quadrant. The westernmost of these is AR13008. Two spots are visible within AR13008 but a close look reveals the westernmost spot to be a tiny line of very close together pores. The easternmost of these faculae at the limb contains a single pore as revealed by the SDO. I did not see the pore. AR13009 in the NW quadrant shows itself as a tiny spot with two pores NE of it. A broad low contrast patch of faculae lies NW of AR13009.

AR13006 in the SW quadrant shows itself as nothing much more than a smear of numerous pores trailing two small spots. I can barely see faculae at it's western end. AR13007 in the SE quadrant is the only well developed spot group on the disc. I see four spots exhibiting umbra/penumbra form. I can see some mottling in the penumbrae of a couple of these spots. One spot is separated from the others to the SW. Two large pores lie just NW of the group. Scattered pores make up the SE portion of the group. Two patches of faculae lie near the SE limb. I see no spots in the southern one but the northern one has two!

The granulation was easily visible at session beginning but not to the point of good resolution.

Carpe Lumen!

James
