May 16 2022 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

My session time is from 14:13 until 15:13 UTC and then back out briefly at 15:50 UTC to verify a tiny spot group ( AR13013 ). Skies are partly cloudy with just below average seeing. The temperature is 72F ( 22.2C ) at 15:00 UTC.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 25x and 33x ( Ha )
I can see ten active region plages in the Ha chromosphere today. Six in the northern hemisphere, five numbered and four in the southern hemisphere, all four numbered.

The triquarta group in the NE quadrant is now listed officially as three different regions in close proximity. AR13011 ( West) AR13014 ( NorthEast ) and AR13015 ( SouthEast ). AR13011 seen as a plage, AR13014 as a larger plage with a filament on it's NW edge and AR13015 a slightly smaller one that is bridged by plage to it's northern neighbor. Two filaments lie south and southeast of AR13015. A new unnumbered region is seen to the east of AR13015. At the first of the session it's quite bright, an M-class flare erupted there about a half hour before I set up. I can see a small bright surge prom associated with it. By sessions end the region had dimmed considerably. Just west of the CLM in the NW quadrant I can see two fainter plages. The westernmost one is associated with AR13008.

AR13007 is easily seen as a plage containing spots in the SW quadrant. The tiny plage of AR13012 is visible just to the NW of it near a filament. A filament is also seen to the north of AR13007. Filaments are also seen east and southeast of AR13007 including a dark easy one in the far south. AR13013 is seen as a plage with fine filaments ESE of AR13007 across the CLM in the SE quadrant. A larger filament is seen to it's SE. A larger plage ( AR13010 ) is seen to the NE of AR13013. A filament is seen to the SE of AR13010. GONG CT shows a couple of small plages in the SE quadrant just off the limb south of the equator. I didn't notice them.

I noticed three nice prominences today. The SE limb has a " Three Bush " prom. The NE limb has a bright prom that roughly resembles an inchworm and the NW limb has a series of proms with the largest being a long loop. One south of it is fan-shaped.

The mottles are easily seen across the Ha solar disc today.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x, 50x and 62.5x ( WL )
I can see nine active regions on the WL photosphere today. Four in the northern hemisphere, three numbered and five in the southern hemisphere with four of those having official numbers.

The triquarta group in the NE quadrant is now listed officially as three different regions in close proximity. AR13011 ( West) AR13014 ( NorthEast ) and AR13015 ( SouthEast ). AR13011 is seen as a couple of small spots. AR13014 is seen as a line of 4 small spots. AR13015 is seen as a fair sized spot showing both umbra and penumbra. A cloud of pores or small spots encased in a shared penumbra lies just to that spot's east. I can't tell exactly the nature of this spot. Faculae is seen to the east to the limb from the triquarta complex. Two tiny pores are seen there. It's associated with a new region, yet unnumbered.

AR13006 is seen in the SW quadrant near the limb as only a patch of faculae. AR13007 is seen in the SW quadrant well NE of the faculae of AR13006. It resembles a broken distorted M shaped asterism. Three spots can be seen to have associated penumbrae. I see nothing of AR13012 to the NW. AR13013 to the ESE of AR13007 is the last region found, using Bizibilder's fine WL image as a guide. Thanks Biz! I see AR13013 only as three tiny pores at 62.5x. I see AR13010 as a couple of small twin spot areas with a cloud of pores just to their east. A single spot is seen near the SE limb. A small patch of faculae is seen just to it's north. It's a new yet unnumbered system emerging from behind the limb.

The fine granulation is visible.

Carpe Lumen!

James

A complicated set of ARs on the disc and I am glad you were able to discern them :hamster:

Alexandra,
The multiple complex in the NE quadrant is quite complex, but the plages themselves are quite easy to see visually. I thought it was a multiple system but I waited on them to be numbered to be for sure.

Franco,
So true. I am getting ready to set up now.

Maurits,
Sorry about the seeing. I hope mine is better.

Thanks and welcomes everyone!

James

Glad you're getting your viewing in James, no luck for me so far this week.

Good luck on your viewing Mark. I did have some cloudy rainy weather over the weekend I just didn't have constant cloud cover and was able to work around it.

I got a prom liftoff today!

James
