May 20 2022 Observations.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

My session time is from 14:49 until 16:45 UTC. The skies are mostly clear but a bit hazy. The seeing is variable and unstable. A bit above average at one moment to well below average at another. The temperature is 83F ( 28.3C ) at 16:00 UTC.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 25x and 33x ( Ha )
I can see eleven active regions in the Ha chromosphere today. Five in the northern hemisphere, all five numbered and six in the southern hemisphere with five numbered.

AR13019 is seen near the NE limb as a bright plage. It looks like there might be some flaring going on here. An easy filament is seen to the north. AR13017 is a large scattered area of plage in the scope that is easy to see. I can see 4 filaments in and around it. AR13014 just to the WNW of AR13017 shows a large scattered plage with embedded spots. I can see a couple of brighter places within the plage complex that may be C class flares. A couple of filaments are seen just NE of AR13014. While AR13017 is still in the NE quadrant AR13014 and AR13015 have now rotated into the NW quadrant. AR13015 SW of AR13014 is easy to see as scattered plage. A single filament lies south of it with another small one lying SE. AR13011 lies just west of AR13015 and is visible as a fainter elongated plage. From AR13011 I can visually detect a belt of disturbance going almost unbroken to the NW limb, passing under a filament. That's pretty good for this little 60!

I can see the plage of AR13007 at the SW limb. I can see some accompanying proms on the limb from it as well as a filament east of it. AR13013 lies almost due east of AR13007 and is visible only as a lightened area under a filament. Three nice filaments lie centered on the CLM in the south. A couple are " broken ". AR13010 in the SE quad is seen as an easy plage with an easy filament within it. AR13016 in the SE quadrant is seen as a spot with plage east of it. A faint filament crosses the plage. AR13018 lies NW of AR13016 and is visible only as a plage. A new plage is seen near the SE limb. It has no number as of yet.

Three proms are seen on the SE limb and three more on the NE limb. The NW limb shows the best one, a smooth triangle, resembling a mountain. I can see no voids or striations within it. I can also see a line of proms at and just NW of the departing AR13007 on the SW limb.

The mottles are soft today in the variable seeing.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I got a whopping 13 active regions and faculae on the WL photosphere today!! Six of seven of them in the northern hemisphere have numbers. Five of Six are numbered in the southern hemisphere.

Two patches of faculae are seen off the NE limb. The southernmost one is fairly bright and shows 4 small visible spots within it. I see no spots or pores in the faculae north of it. The faculae with spots is numbered AR13019. AR13017 well west of AR13019 is just a wide scattering of small spots. Three are easily seen. AR13014 to it's NW is a large fused mass of spots-umbrae among a shareed penumbra. It's hard to describe spot groups like this. They are so massed up it's hard to figure out what is what. It reminds me of a ciliate now with the mouth being at the broad end and the cilia being the 4 pores ringing the mouth. It's looking for lone pores to eat!! AR13015 lies just to it's SW as two spots. AR13011 in the NW quad is seen only with a close look as a couple of tiny pores. And I can see a faint patch of faculae which is associated with an unnumbered disturbance east of AR13008 which is not visible on the NW limb.

AR13007 is visible as a bright patch of faculae very close to the SW limb. SDO shows a spot there but I cannot see it. I can only barely detect the faculae of AR13013 East of AR12007. NE of the faint facula of AR13013 lies the spotted region of AR13010. I can see seven spots/pores here but SDOHMIc shows more. They are arranged in a rectangle shape. I see no faculae here. I can see 4 spots/pores in AR13016 in the SE quadrant. The largest spot has a penumbra. I cannot see anything of AR13018 NW of AR13016. SDO however shows a single tiny pore there. I can see two patches of faculae near the SE limb. The northern one is easy but the southern one is harder to see and takes a close look to see. Neither contain any spots or pores.

The fine granulation comes and goes but is not visible well at all.

Happy Friday! I hope everyone has a good solar weekend!!

James

Thanks for the report James, there's plenty to see at the moment which is nice. Looks like i'm in for a cloudy weekend unfortunately, however the sunoculars might cut through some of the thinner cloud at times. Got a CaK disk to process from earlier in the week so should get that up later.
