First light HR images with solar 300 mm f/4 telescope - Laszlo Francsics
Hi,
I am pleased to share with you the first light images taken by Laszlo Francsics with his 300 mm f/4 solar telescope :
The telescope is not yet fully optimized, but it looks very promising. The images were taken with a 6.25x APM coma corrector Barlow lens, 540 nm continuum filter and ASI174.
More information here:

Here are some images of the telescope :

The actual first light was indeed taken from a site in the Austrian Alpes mountains (1700 m aletitude), with ground covered with snow. Still the seeing was very bad, probably due to local ground effect.

The solar images shown here were actually taken from a kind of "Big bear" site un Hungary (106 m altitude), next to a big lake. The telescope is on a pier about 150 m away from the shore (see red arrow) :

Superb! Simply stunning. Fabulous scope and what better than to image from a position on the water?

Amazing. Is an ERF needed for such setup?

Hi, the uncoated mirror itself is the ERF filter. It acts like a Herschell Prism, reflects 4% percent of the sunlight.

Re: First light HR images with solar 300 mm f/4 telescope - Laszlo Francsics
Dear Christian,
Thanks so much for sharing these amazing photos, telescope and dream location.
I think my (and our) worst enemy is the "ground effects" and the lower levels of the atmosphere. The jetstream may be there one day and not the other, but if the very local ground conditions are bad like in my actual place), we can very rarely have a just acceptable seeing.
So far, I was thinking that the best seeing is close to the ocean influenced by the work of Damiann Peach in the Barbados and some conversations with him. Little by little I realize that there are some examples of inland locations in Europe and the US that are far away from the ocean and have dream seeing...
Are the surrounding vegetation and a plane perhaps more important than the water? Of course in the Hungarian example you have both, which is fantastic, but also Austrian locations have shown to be fantastic (another example I had was in Arizona). Any other idea you may have, since you have studied the seeing for so long? What should be my candidate locations in theory, to make trials?
Best wishes,
Alexandros

I am trying to find locations with the best seeing in my country to make a small observatory and the details you added are very useful.christian viladrich wrote: ↑Thu May 19, 2022 10:26 am
