WELCOME TO OUR NEW HOST!

Post by solarchat »

The consultant and I have put about 12 hours into downloading, backing up, uploading, tweaking, SSL certificates, remaking the search index, etc. and we are now up and running on our new host “Deeamhost”

Everything is running super fast and very smoothly and I don’t think we lost any posts.

We are still tweaking the email settings but should have that up and running very soon.

Thank you very much to those of you that have donated at paypal.me/cbsap to our various fundraisers to make all this happen and to keep this incredible Solar Astronomy forum going.

And Steven thank you for all of your hard work!!

I'll still behave as if I am on the old host. Downsize and combine large pictures into smaller ones to reduce file size. Even large server spaces can be filled up if everyone decides do upload lots of huge files!

Great stuff Stephen!

Remember folk's it's your donations that have allowed this to happen. The spring fundraiser is still underway, let's make it a bumper year and see if we can beat the target!

Thanks, Stephen for all the works.

Yes, I believe there must be a limit of the pictures volume, no TIFF and other too large files.
1 Mb is absolutely enough in JPEG and PNG.

EXACTLY AS OUR VALERY HAS SAID, THAT TO KEEP OUR IMAGES TO A MAXIMUM OF SAY ONE/TWO MEGABYTES PER IMAGE, IS MORE THAN ADEQUATE IN KEEPING THE RESOLUTION AND QUALITY HIGH ENOUGH FOR THE PURPOSE.

ANY LARGER IMAGE SIZES, COULD AND SHOULD BE POSTED/LINKED TO SOLARCHAT - VIA ANOTHER WEBSITE..

SO THANKS VM TO STEPHEN FOR THE ERRORTS.

by the way. I'm a big fan of very little fanfare and graphics etc... on the page. I would much rather let the content do the talking and hence we haven't changed any of the page graphics for over a decade...:). I hope to never have to change them. :)

The forum works perfectly on the iphone. That’s how I access it.
What did you have in mind? By the way, I developed an iPhone app to test solar glasses back in 2017 as that would have easily sold 10-20 million copies as much hysteria came around concerning solar glasses. Unfortunately, Apple wanted 1/3 of the sales and it took a minimum of $25,000 to even get it listed in the App Store.

THE SEARCH FEATURE HAS BEEN RESTORED!
Now that we have plenty of space, our internal search feature works again like it is supposed to.
For those interested, the text search index on a PhPBB forum is as large as the forum text database itself. Ours was 600MB meaning with the 1GB limit on databases on the previous host, we could not have one as it would have put us at 1.2GB with no more room to expand.

(our attachments are currently at 58GB and not part of the database. They are simply referenced in the database and kept in a separate folder.

well, if they are going to your spam, at least they are getting to you. if you check your email server, you can “whitelist” oir domain and they will go to the inbox.
The problem has been that our emails from Network Solutions we’re all getting blocked as spam before they ever got to the end-user. Apparently, pretty much everyone blocks stuff from Network Solutions because they are so large and have so many spammers

The old host was often quirky on my iPhone. Slow to access, slow to load and sometimes would not connect at all. It usually worked flawlessly on the computer. Since the switchover I haven't had an issue connecting with my iphone at all. Hmm...

Dear Stephen, just a very minor thing: I have just noticed that on the main page, the image with the text "Solar Image of the Day" is missing.
Best, Daniele
