beautiffull prom this morning June 16th

Hello,
despite the plane traffic spoiling the sky over Paris I could image that !!

I hope in the afternoon (Paris time) I'll be able to see it again as my time gap through the window is longer !

No idea how a spectro-coronograph works, but the results are still awesome!

thank you very much :)

but look at this one taken with a 600 lines/mm grating : the definition is far better!!

Thats why i say that too much dispersion deteriorate the image quality in the wide slit spectroscopic method.

Good shots! I'll pop the thread in the spectro section of the forum.

These are very nice results.
I have to admit I'm surprised at the better definiton you achieve with the 600 l/mm grating.
You're also able to capture quite a wide field of view with this grating. I would have thought that you are beginning to shift too far away from the absorption line centre at the edges of the field.
Cheers.
Peter

Thanks p_zetner :

It doesnt matter at all if i'm far away from the center of the h alpha line as the whole prominence is in fact the "H alpha line itself".

Its not a SHG : there is no scanning of any sort ; nor image reconstruction.. Its just that the slit of the spectroscope is wide ; as wide as it can be to contain the prominence (provided the contrast is good enough to still beeing able to see it and record it with the camera).

The fact that the 600 l/mm gives sharper images come from that fact that an point of the object seen at the entrance slit plane will become an elongated point in the focal plane of the spectroscope depending on the dispersive power . So the more dispersion, the more blurry it'll become. Especially if the doppler effect is present and thats the case of the structure of prominences!!

In a SHG you select a thin line of the h alpha line (a pixel only) and not the whole h alpha line itself ; and then you scan and reconstruct line by line the image.

In the wide slit methode i already have my image formed. But in the SHG you have a strong contrast. In the wide slit method it all depends on the sky purity and the Lyot diaphragm.

If I used a 300l/mm I would even achieve even more sharpness but the contrast would be quite low... I will try...
