It's on fire! M-class flare caught on camera (RC8)

Post by GreatAttractor »

After an unsuccessful Sunday session, today I finally caught a flare in the AR 2993/2994 sunspot complex. The seeing looked so-so in the live view, but apparently the faster camera and capturing a lot of frames helped, as the stacks are relatively stable in quality (250 fps, 10-second videos, 2 ms shutter with mild gain, 15% stacked).

GSO RC8 with Aries ERF and Lunt 50 etalon, camera: Blackfly S (IMX273), stacked with AS!3, processed and aligned in ImPPG, 20-second intervals, 1:07 h total (patience - large file):
Image

Interesting that despite being M1.1-class (NOAA solar event list), it looks somewhat less dramatic than the last year's C4.0 (more or less the same image scale):
Image

But after all, the classes are assigned based on X-ray flux detected at Earth orbit, not per “did it swirl well?”.

This reminds me of a possible flare shown on SDO images around 17:00UTC today. The details are remarkably similar. Nice catch! Your Ha image shows what much of the SDOAIA304 image shows!! A second flare in the SW quadrant occurred about a half hour later.

Two thumbs up!

Thank you, everyone.

I'm thinking of getting a 4 TB SSD for acquisition now, because on Sunday I filled up the current 2 TB one (recording at a rate of about 10 GB/min.) and had to start deleting earlier videos while waiting for some flare action.

WoW that’s an incredible amount of space to fill up in one session!!

Wow! Very nice and detailed animation. Also, good to see that RC is also good telescope for solar.
