Sol FD WL 2022.06.17

Post by nicosolcy »

Busy. Very busy up there :)

Usual early morning imaging run and today I created an artificial flat to take care of uneven illumination due to curvature of the Sun.

I used in the past artificial flats for Ha imaging, but first time I did one for WL. It does help, but I need to tweak the process more.

For anyone interested in doing this for either Ha or WL, process in PS is as follows:

- Copy layer and work on layer as below
- Do a Noise / Dust and Scratches 31 Radius
- Do a Noise / Median Filter 45 Radius
- 3x Adjustments / Curves / Presets / Darker
- Set layer to Difference
- Adjust opacity to have even illumination to the extend that it does not hurt detail that much
- Flatten image or merge layers

I reprocessed. I need to be using Photoshop more!!!

I will actually write a couple of actions to automate most of it, but yeah, I got my lazy behind to actually do some work and aside from having to increase brightness, I like this repro!

Looks good Nick. I like the first discs the best. Less sharpening noise.

Appreciate the feedback! I'll work on the sharpening issue and also to find a middle of the road balance between the two types of processing.

Made a small gif and spent sometime looking at it to determine which I like best and I came to the conclusion that I need to be a little less aggressive overall - but only a little!

Wow!! great work :bow :hamster: I like how the second processing brings out the faculae right out into the disc, quite amazing really.

Thanks Alexandra :)

I need to sit down over the weekend and document the PS workflow for this, before I forget what I did!

Great to see both sets to compare. The first mono image is my favourite.
It's always a fine balance between enough detail and over sharpening isn't it!
Thanks for sharing your progress,
Nic

Nick,
How do you add the AR numbers to your images?

Hi James,

I do this in Movari Picverse, but can do this equally well in Photoshop. Lacking photoshop, you can use Photofiltre 7 which is a free image editing software.

🤔 I wonder if GIMP will do it?

Should do it. It’s just adding text in a different layer and then flattening the image.

Nice WL FDs in various ‘flavours’. I prefer not to flatten FD images as the do tend to become ‘flat disk’ rather than ‘full disks’, if you see what I mean?

In WL the limb is actually darker than the central part of the disk which emphasises it as a sphere and I prefer to retain this feature when processing, but like anything, it’s down to personal preference.

You’ve captured the spots and nice granulation, but it can be tempting to over sharpen and, as a consequence, introduce artefacts. I prefer your first image, although the second does show the faculae in better contrast.

It’s so good to see so much activity.

Stu.

Very nice work, Nick!

I also prefer the first set with less contrast.

Thanks for sharing,
Arne
