AR13040 Calcium H

Post by sywong2000 »

Hi everyone

Weather is improving but still very very cloudy. But I was able get like 30 mins with better transparency and I can take some images. A lot of turbulences so definitely not the best condition... the sky was always filled with a medium layer of haze... anyways...

This is my second attempt using Askar 107phq. Previously I tested with the cheapo 80mm GRB UV/IR cut and a blue filter as the ERF. It turns out both filters do reduce the contrast and losing details.... so, no surprise from these filters...

Yet I was able to test a few filter as internal ERF: Baader UV IR turns out completely blocked (expected, give it a try anyway)... Optolong 1.25" UV/IR cut did produce very sharp imagines, and so does the optolong Blue filter. I don't know if I will crack the filter for long exposures.... hopefully not.

Image was taken with Askar 107phq, 4x televue, ZWO ASI 290mm, Optolong UV IR cut

Getting there Stephen, was this stopped down or full aperture?

Mark,
This is a full aperture. I should have stopped down but I was in a hurry to fight with the weather and time do not allow me to unscrew the 80mm filter out of the cell, which I should have. I’ll try again with a stop down configuration.

I would try with components in the following order: scope > UV/IR filter > Telecentric > Quark > camera.

I am surprised the UV/IR cut filter allows the near UV light of CaH to pass.

Certain brands they allows the near UV range pass. From what I learnt the astonimik L1 (not L2,L3), and the Optolong allows the near UV (39x nm) to pass. I think the SvBony and ZWO would do the same, from their spectrum diagram, but I cannot confirm. The one available from Daystar definitely allows the near UV range.

Meanwhile putting the Baader UV/IR yields a complete dark grey image.

I have thought about using the Optolong B to be the ERF. From testing yesterday it does allow the 39x nm to pass, and it blocks the R and G also and supposingly it would reduce the energy hitting beyond. I’m guessing it’s a reflective filter as I see the color when I view from a side it shows yellow (or red, I forgot).. if it’s true it probably wouldn’t be easy to crack. However possible downside of putting it as internal filter may reflect the lights and causing heat stacking up in scope. The other factor is the price, B alone in 2” is like 100 USD, which a UV IR is much cheaper.

A very nice image, Stephen. Interesting thread about UV filters and Calcium.
