Solar Saturday 25th June

Post by marktownley »

Mrs T is away this weekend, and I might have fallen asleep on the sofa last night  However was rudely awaken this morning at 4am with the cats walking all over me to tell me it was breakfast time. While initially I was not grateful at their early morning enthusiasm I realised it was clear and got a lovely view of the line of planets in the dawn sky along with the crescent moon, so, they were forgiven ;) A few coffees later and it was 6am and the sun was over my back yard, so with the solarquest mount that lives on the tall pier round the back I set out to grab a Ha full disk.

My east - west enigma remains, tuning is spot on with no unevenness as in the image below facing east, but when the scope is pointing west the unevenness exists, very strange! I had to do little tuning to get this image... Lots happening on the disk!

Switching to the yard round the other side of the house, and using the EQ6 mount on the permanent pier, I was keen to try a 53mm mask I had made for the APM 100/800 to bring it to f15, which I found in the week seems to be a real synergy with the ZWO183mm camera. I recorded in 16 bit which I have to say with the 183 seems to give more headroom in the highlights, trouble is huuuuggge file size - everything is a compromise! Anyway, pleased with the disk, seeing was spot on and viewed full size in flickr and you can just start to resolve the penumbral fibrils in ar13040.

Keen to explore the f15 filter / zwo183 synergy I got out the Bresser 127L, and stopping this down to 80mm gave me that f15 beam. To my surprise it has twice as much transmission in CaK as the APM 100/800 does at the same focal ratio / filter / camera combo, not bad considering it is a 1/10th of the price! Light throughput is everything in CaK. Using roi with the 183mm I was still able to get 60fps in 16bit, which I found quite acceptable!

Pleased with how these came out!

Then, in true UK weather fashion, the seeing collapsed as instability set in, and within 10 minutes the sky was totally cloudy, which has remained so ever since, and looking out of the window as I type this we have showers too.

Hoping conditions repeat tomorrow morning, in which case I think I will try some hi-res CaK if the seeing allows. Hope you like these!

Mark

These are excellent Mark, looks like that big prom on the NW just stayed low to the “ground” and just rotated out of view. I watched a number of the Gong sites but never saw a liftoff. Those CaK shots are amazing!

Thanks Brian, Thanks Petrus.

The Alarm Cats allowed me a lie in until 5am this morning, which is very well timed as allowed me to get up, have coffee, make their breakfast and in the next 15 mins or so I shall go out an check out the Ha full disk...
