Animation of the huge NW filaprom 6/23/2022

Post by rigel123 »

Maybe it's just me but the base of the southernmost section of the huge filaprom reminds me of the F5 tornado from the movie Twister! 45 minutes in real time and sped up a lot to show the motion. Inverted. Lunt LS60T DS, ASI174MM, Meade 3X Tele-extender.

That is cracking - the speed of with which that base is rotating vs the pace at which other structures are changing is quite something.

in my silly head canon, the point of the filaprom is actually a wild fire started by some idiot at a gender reveal party with the smoke rising up and drifting over

Lovely animation. :bow

What is your secret to capturing a filaprom so clearly?

If I overexposed then I lost the filament on the disk.
If I exposed for the filament the prom vanished in ImPPG.
Yet I could clearly see both on the monitor.

Beautiful work Warren. You've brought it to life. I was able to image the prominence part itself but I never could see the filament part. I think I was tuned a bit high. Even twiddling the tuning wheel and peg on the Coronado 90 I never could pick out the filament though the prom part was easy. Hmm...

You got both parts superbly!!

Having the double stack really helps in keeping the filament portion as well as the prom, and I will admit that recording this one while the image was inverted on the screen allowed me to set the gamma and gain to how I wanted the image to look before any processing. Then in ImPPG I played with the points quite a bit on the histogram to get the best contrast where I wanted it, which made some of the surface a little darker than I might normally like it but brought out the features in the filament/prom the best. Good seeing really played a part in being able to bring out those details as well. It will be interesting to see how another animation I am currently processing that I recorded and did not have the view inverted will turn out. I found it much more difficult to get a nice balance on the screen with the filaprom as it was when recording with the image inverted.

Thank you Warren. :bow

Very useful information and things to try ourselves.
Albeit without your masterful processing skills and/or DS. :D

Truly great animation, Warren. Love the fact that is inverted, adds to the visual effect.

Adding the animation in normal mode that I did an hour prior to the original animation posted here. Not as dramatic as the inverted version, this one is one hour in real time and does have some nice activity in and around the main prom. The rotation is not as obvious.

I notice the tendril of plasma under the southern part of the filaprom arise and then fade away.

Nicely done! 👍🏻
