June 28 2022 Imaging. First time using " new " equipment.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 15:30 until 17:00 UTC. Very intermittent. Overcast skies with thinner clouds in gaps of thicker cloud. Seeing well below average to poor. I never got an image in without peering through clouds! The temperature is 75F ( 23.8C ). Most of my images went into the bin!

The equipment used is my SolarMax II 90 in single stack and the Celestron NexStar 102 GT with the Baader 540nm green filter and the Point Grey Grasshopper CCD monochrome camera. I also used the MacBook Pro for image acquisition for the first time using ASTRO IIDC. I struggled a bit today, these are certainly not that great but giving the poor weather and my needing practice on the new equipment and software, it's a start.

Thanks again Steven, CBSAP and SolarChat!!

James

Congrats on the first results.
These high quality ccd cameras must be great for full disk images.

They should be. I just have to learn to use them and have good weather to do so.

Thanks Dennis.

Certainly not my best work. It wasn’t the equipment though but the weather and my inexperience with the software and Mac. I got quite a bit to learn on imaging in general.

These are nice results James! Considering this is with an alt az mount it is even better. Cloudy for me today so good to see what is going on.

Thanks Mark. My inability to have motorized tracking on my altaz mount limits me to 300 frame stacks. Much more and I can’t get them to line up in AVIStack. I wonder if ASTRO IIDC will do any better. Of course I can do single frame captures just fine.

Congratulations on putting all that new gear to work!

Please don't hate me for suggesting this, but why not install Windows through Boot Camp on your Mac and use any capture software you wish and also AS3! to stack? Such an installation is free for Mac users.

I bought a pre-owned Macbook Pro myself and I just finished installing Windows 10 on it. Planning to use both Mac OS and Windows for various tasks and switching between the two is relatively easy and fast.

Planning to have Firecapture, AS3!, IMPPG and PS on Windows, and then use Photos and Pixelmator Pro for final processing as I find them indispensable and currently I part process on Windows, then transfer to my iPad for further processing. That will soon come to an end with the fully configured Mac!

Nick,
Not a bad idea. I could then use SharpCap and AVIStack on the Mac as I do on my Windows 8.1 laptop. But still, ASTRO IIDC looks like a very capable piece of software. GIMP and PhotoShop have both Mac and Windows versions, GIMP supports Linux as well including Ubuntu which I can boot into as an option to my usual OS ( Windows 7 ) on my previous desktop.

Firecapture is installed on the Macs. and I hear a lot of good things about IMPPG.

Are there a way to use the iPhone as a live viewer in place of a monitor? How would one connect it to a camera. The Macs and Windows use FireWire and USB3 cable connections. An iPhone would have to use Lightning or Wifi. Hmm.... :?

Thanks for the suggestion.

Unfortunately not. What's wrong with the delicious hi res screen of your Mac???

Nothing. The MacBook Pro has better resolution than my Windows desktop does and it or the Windows 8.1 machine would always be used for imaging but the iPhone would make a good quick viewer just for visual and is very portable, especially if I got into CaK which my eyes probably won't be able to see very well at my age.

What would stop the iPhone from being used? The iPhone and iPad are quite similar and the iPad can be used. ZWO makes a wifi device that I hear can be used to connect a tablet to a ZWO camera. Why not an iPhone?

You can use the iOS or android ASIAir App to connect to ASIAir device, which controls only ZWO cameras. It is used for imaging and EAA and I use it for EAA, so yes, under those conditions, any Apple of Android device (phone / tablet) can do that.

You can install Bluestacks Android emulator on your Mac and run the ASI camera, for views but then to image, you will have to choose to either stay in ASIAir and capture, or open Firecapture, kill bluestacks as it is resource intensive and then capture.

But, you MUST use a ZWO ASI camera to use the ASIAir app. It is a closed ecosystem

Bluetooth? Zoom? Remote Desktop?

I know little or nothing on the subject but still managed to use an Android tablet to control and view my Sony HD action camera.

Yep, use any remote desktop app. Or try any of the options here:

I have a ZWO camera to use with it.

Bluetooth? Memory fade. This was years ago now.
I'd use my action camera on a tall, telescopic pole.
This was before drones were invented. ;)

Electronically Assisted Astronomy. Stacking of images to get a massive Signal to Noise ratio and see Deep Sky Objects in seconds, even through the light pollution of the city.

I launched a 110 film camera built into the nose cone of a model rocket once. It snapped a pic when the charge popped the chute.

This being a solar forum, I won't post photos of EAA out of respect.

Suffice to say, if you google it, you will find the right places to visit and learn of this activity.

This is where we are heading, due to light pollution and also eyes that do not gather light as well through the eyepiece as they used to do. Light pollution and ageing - can't fight them ;)

Light pollution and ageing - can't fight them ;)
So true that!! We have much brighter skies here in western North Carolina than we had in my youth but so far my vision has held out pretty well but I'm quite sure it is not what it was when I was seventeen.

Thank you Alexandra, there is just not enough there and no matter what I did I just couldn’t get the proms to stand out on the limb. They weren’t exactly easy to see on the monitor either through the thin uniform cloud.

Will do, Mr. Roel. Imaging will certainly be seen more from me in addition to my visual reports, especially in the warmer months.

Thanks.

James

Thanks Pedro and Stu. Lately weather is a big issue for me. I am always imaging through clouds or the seeing sucks, or both!!
