June 30 2022. Attempt at imaging :-(

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from about 15:00 until 16:30 UTC with most of it sitting under an almost overcast cloud deck. I never really got a clearing and tried to image through clouds. It seemed that when adjusting the exposure in ASTRO IIDC to the PGR Grasshopper I was either too bright or too dim. I spent a considerable amount of time fiddling with the exposure and brightness plus the clouds varied the exposure constantly. I don't think I ever really got it right. Tuning and focusing was an issue too. I had quite a bit of problems seeing enough detail on the monitor to tune or focus on! I was quite dismayed by the end of the session. I had intended to image white light too which should have been a bit easier but clouds completely had me by that point. The temperature was 80F ( 26.6C ) and humid at session's end.

I used the SMII60 in SS for today's imaging attempt.

Below is today's BEST image :-/

Lovely picture, nice style of processing in my opinion. I like the halo.
Frustrating not to get the surface details I guess!

Good luck
Robert

The processing might have been the bright point but the lack of surface detail was very frustrating.

Thanks.

Lovely, artistic image of the sun James! I think the clouds really sapped the details out of your disk but gave you that lovely halo.

I am sure the clouds had a lot to do with my bland disc but I still wonder how much of it was my lack of skill.

And yes the clouds gave me that wonderful halo that I added color to. It was actually more extensive if I would have left the area around the sun brighter.

The next week doesn’t look too good for either visual observing or imaging. Clouds and thunderstorms are numerous in the forecast.

Right! Empty carton box to put laptop in so that you have some shade to see contrast on the monitor, or go hardcore and do the same with a blanket over your head and laptop!

The clouds give a nice twist to the final image!

I usually use a plastic storage bin to place the laptop in to shield it from the Sun but sometimes I place it on a bench against the small storage shed I store my Losmandy mount since the shed provides ample shade for the laptop in the late AM hours.

The cloud produced halo did add a nice touch to the image. It added an artistic touch to an otherwise bland image.

10/10 for persistence, James. Sometimes you just have to know when you’re being defeated by the conditions. We’ve all been there, I’m sure. I know I have!

I admire your persistence James, I would have given up straight away ;) However, you do have a lovely shot for the effort. I think you might have a more relaxing time if you just wait for a very clear day when you can spend time fighting the imaging and not doing double battle with clouds as well.

You get the bravery badge though :bow :hamster:

James:
Hard when haze or clouds do not help.
Persistence is the only way to deal with these conditions.
Best regards.

Thanks everyone. Frustrating it was. I probably should have done just a white- light visual. I certainly would have enjoyed it more.

You're on the learning curve so don't be dismayed James. It's a good start and we all had to start somewhere, persistence will pay off.
