July 2 2022 Imaging Session.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Today's session was from 14:50 to 15:35 UTC. The skies were mostly clear but the seeing was well below average to poor. The temperature was 81F ( 27.2C ) I used my Coronado SolarMax II 90 in both single stack and double stack. I also used the Celestron 102 for 540nm continuum. I observed white light last and the seeing was so bad I could hardly focus! I used the MacBook Pro 17" laptop with the Point Grey Grasshopper. All are single shot grabs. I will try video image stacking using ASTRO IIDC on my next run using it. Today's image grabs were done using ASTRO IIDC and editing/processing was done using GIMP.

Overall they are certainly better than my last two attempts but still short a bit of what I have been able to do with SharpCap and the ZWO ASI178MM. Practice should change that in due time though. I would have fared better in better seeing and I need to remember to image at a higher resolution. It's harder to work with 1024x768 grabs!! I usually start at full resolution and downsize/crop as/if needed. I had too few editing options at that low crop factor. I'll remember to change it next time.

I also included the images from the KSO solar observatory in Austria which was still imaging almost in realtime at the time of my session. Those will at least let everyone know what was going on at that time in absence of my usually detailed visual observations.

You are welcome Eric. Bad seeing hit me hard today. Hopefully I'll have better luck next time. At least I had few clouds!!

Nice report and images there James, you got a lot in 45 minutes. I share your pain with seeing though! Up early here this Sunday morning in the hope of getting some imaging in very first thing, not sure how successful I will be though, the clouds are lit up beautifully at sunrise ;)

Thanks Mark. I just feel like I am not progressing enough. Of course I cannot help things like seeing and clouds though.

It definitely takes time James, take a look at some of my shots from way back in 2010 https://brierleyhillsolar.blogspot.com/2010/

There are so many things with solar imaging that take time to master.

I would try the DS60 or the 70mm scope on the AzGti for imaging first, you will find having more stable frames will help the stacking software in the first instance, the smaller apertures are also more seeing friendly which will help.

Mark,
The 60 and 70mm scopes do full discs too! I wish I would have gotten the SolarQuest. The AZGTI does not seem to track the Sun very well. I talked to a Sky-Watcher rep and he said the solarquest had a second encoder that the AZGTI lacks. He said the SolarQuest was much better for the Sun. I went all purpose with the AZGTI when I should have gotten a dedicated solar mount. The SolarQuest.

While a lot of improvement can be seen in your work since then I still think your early work still looks pretty darn good. On average still better than my work is now.

Hi James

I was always frustrated with the AzGTi for ages, couldn't get it to do what I wanted, hated the phone app to control it, best thing I ever did was get a handset to control it, they come up quite often on the 2nd hand market.

Mark,
I am not nuts on the phone control ether. I would rather have the handset controller as well.

Thanks Warren!

Stick with it James! You've got a great selection there.
No reference to music in this post... maybe get some tunes on in the background!
You'll get where you want to be in time,
Nic

Thanks for the encouragement Nic. It may take me some time to get there!! ;-)

I had music going on in the house. Jazz I think. Keiko Matsui.

A great set James, you are doing really well, keep at it :)
The Sun came out really late Sunday evening for me and I had a quick imaging session with the PSTs to grab some aphelion shots, seeing was terrible but hey ho, better than nothing ;)

Thanks Alexandra. I hear you about seeing. Poor seeing and clouds have plagued me lately.

Today is aphelion? Cool.
