7-2-2022 Images: Quark+Lunt 40mm double stack at 102mm aperture

Post by Oak »

Hi All,

Yesterday, I had a very rushed session looking between clouds and testing out a new tracking motor system on my mount (OnStep). These are taken with an AT102ED f/7 and quark chromosphere followed by a Lunt 40mm etalon in the telecentric output of the quark. Camera with 4.8um pixels, no reducer. Reasonably happy with the images, despite some dust bunnies…

These are very good Derek, what exposure and gain settings did you use?

Thanks Martin! I believe these were about 7.5ms with gain somewhere in the middle of my available range. The metadata did not save with the raw files unfortunately and my note taking was not great. Eventually, I will rememebr to document properly.

Thanks so much for the kind words everyone. I'm really enjoying the learning process for this.

For color, I use curves in Gimp with settings close to those in this tutorial by John O'Neal: https://www.photographingspace.com/colo ... ar-images/.

The curves end up looking like this:

Hi Derek,
Nice images! Your DS system works well and judging by the uniformity of the field (if you have some dust bunnies then without a flat frame?), the Quark is quite good.
May I play a bit..? I just touched Shadow and Highlight tool in Astra Image to pop up the limb and nice prom out there.
thanks for sharing

Thanks Leo,
You really brought out more detail in that image. I will have a go with the shadows/highlight to see if I can reproduce. I am still a novice at this sort of image processing. No flats here so I guess the uniformity is ok. I know the quark is not totally uniform as I have measured transmission/tuning across the etalon with a hydrogen lamp. Apparently that nonuniformity did not translate into large changes in the images.
