First ISS solar transit 7/3/2022

Post by rigel123 »

I'm sure I can do better but it was fun capturing this first, really fast transit (1.1 seconds) this morning at 8:28 AM EDT. It came across the limb right when Transit Finder predicted. I went full disk since I was pretty sure where it was supposed to cross but now I know how accurate the prediction can be so I might try zooming in a bit on the next one. As it is, here is an animation of the transit slowed down and a composite image. I tried combining a stacked image of the sun with the composite but the ISS just shows up better with the single frames layered together. It was really fun watching that thing zoom across!!

Nice capture, Warren. I’ve done this only once, but I remember the thrill when everything came together and I got some clear frames. It was a close call, though, with quite a few clouds around threatening to block the view.

It really is such a fantastic sight, it makes you grin from ear to ear :hamster: since the loss of Calsky I haven't looked as I can't find a site which alerts me, such a sad loss.

Fabulous capture :bow :hamster: :hamster:

Thanks folks, I think I actually did a fist pump when I actually saw it zip across the disk and I knew I was capturing it! Actually got 100 frames of it on the disk but would like to try with a closeup to actually get some detail on the station.

Hi Alexandra,
Have you tried this one…. https://transit-finder.com/ ? This is the one I used and it seemed to work okay, but I don’t think it can be set to alert you; not sure.

Congratulations on your capture of the ISS. :bow

This raises the interesting matter of scale and appearance:
The truly gigantic dimensions required to appear the same size.
If the ISS was actually close to the sun.
Rather than orbiting just a mere 400 kilometres above our heads.

You should definitely try it Franco, of course now that I have caught it once I’ll be looking for chances to improve to get better detail of the ISS!
