Monster Filaprom! High Res | HA | July 15th 2022
Hey all,
Somehow I had a clear morning despite it raining for days and was prepared to miss this one. But I was blessed with some time this morning and good sub-arc-second seeing. That big monstrous filament made it to the limb and didn't lift off, so we have our monstrous filaprom to celebrate! What a beast it is. It's several Earth diameters out into the corona and we can enjoy seeing the one structure both as a filament and a prominence at the same time. And with luck it's near a rather nice spot in an active region to boot! Such a great quadrant to watch. Plus, a decent minor flare occurred near that AR this morning too and I watched it visually develop and then simmer down. It can be seen in my full disc image half way through its occurrence. There's another massive filament, also almost 1 light second in length that has been trailing but it lifted off about 30 minutes after I imaged the area. It was thinner and darker and then later when I wrapped up my session with a full disc it was more diffuse and now it's lifted off and gone, so that one won't make the limb. Quite the whale!
Some of these HA images are mosaics and very large, click them to visit my Flickr for the full resolution image size as these are just thumbnails.
B&W:
False Colored:
Equipment:
150mm F8 Refractor
214mm Aries Triband DERF (primary DERF) in 3D printed holding cell masked to 150mm
Baader Red CCD-IR Block Filter (secondary DERF) -> Air Spaced Etalon 1 -> ITF & 10mm Blocking Filter -> Baader TZ4 -> Air Spaced Etalon 2 -> 0.6x Reducer -> IMX174 Sensor
Lunt 60mm Modular with TZ4 and 2nd Air Spaced Etalon -> 0.6x Reducer -> IMX174 Sensor (Full Disc, Mosaic)
Very best,

That's a great collection Marty! I was able to get out this early afternoon, but with the seeing I had I'm sure my results won't be so nice as yours!

Some alternative views, rotated for a more pleasing composition, and inverted simply because it really shows off filaments I think differently visually for us.

Marty,
These are some of the finest images you have ever done in my opinion. They are beautiful!! Excellent resolution and I love the color. It really adds to a dramatic presentation of that magnificent filaprom! These display solar imaging at it’s best. And with achromats too!!
