July 16 2022 Imaging. Large SW Prom!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

My session time was from 17:00 to 18:00 UTC. Intermittent. Considerable cloudiness with all images done through varying amounts of cloud cover. The seeing was below average and the temperature was 82F ( 27.7C )

The equipment used are the Coronado SolarMax II 90 in both single and double stack and the Celestron C102 using the Altair wedge and 540nm Baader filter. Today I used the MacBook Pro running Astro IIDC for image acquisition and GIMP for processing and editing. The camera used was the Point Grey Grasshopper.

I used my mediocre images done in Ha to demonstrate the changes in the prominence on the SW limb during the time I observed.

I'll also include a few professional images to identify features on the disc in absence of my detailed visual observations.

James

A nice collection of images there James! Sun has risen here now (still below local horizon) so going to get out soon and see how this prom has evolved.

A beautiful set of images, James: love the prominence evolution set with the different coloring. The white light came out very well too. Keep those images coming !

Thanks and welcomes everyone. I noticed after processing that the images show the progression of the prominence well during the time I observed so I used them to portray that. It’s not as good as an animation but it works!

The prominence evolution series is really fun - more so than a traditional animation b/c of the colour changes - you should do more of those!

Vin,
The idea of a side by side combined image of the prominence evolution was a last minute idea. I would have probably colored them all the same, or close to it or have left them all in monochrome if I would have planned this right off. But the different colors does make it " artsy " doesn't it?

Thanks Martin and you are welcome.

I think the different colours is definitely better - not only wrt the aesthetics but also b/c I think it makes you pay more attention to each image in the set and so then you notice the subtle changes between them more.
