July 19 2022 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

My session time was from 14:50 until 16:04 UTC. The skies are mostly clear with just above average seeing. The temperature at 15:30 UTC is 80F ( 26.6C ).

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 25x and 33x ( Ha )
I can see ten AR plages in the Ha chromosphere today. Seven in the northern hemisphere with four being shown as numbered systems on the KSO images. Three are seen in the southern hemisphere with two of these having NOAA numbers.

I can see five plage areas in the NE quadrant! Just above the equator in the far east I see a small plage. NW of it I see another but it is fainter. A bent filament lies NW of this plage. Due south crossing over another filament lies another unnumbered plage. Due west of this one is the spot of AR13060 with it's eastern plage and easy long thin filament. Just NW of AR13060 lies AR13058 showing a couple of spots with plage stretching to the ENE just above AR13060. An easy filament lies just SW of AR13058. I can see some detail in that filament. To the WNW of AR13058 in the NW quadrant lies AR13057. I can see a spot with northeastward trailing plage and a filament. AR13061 is seen as a small plage near the NW limb.

AR13056 is seen as a scattered elongated plage in the SW quadrant. The spots are a bit difficult to see in Ha. A filament is located ENE of this active region. East of that filament and just west of the CLM lies a small plage. Though small it isn't hard to see. Across the CLM in the SE quadrant lies AR13059 with a spot with plage again trailing to the east! Why are the plages all to the east of their major spots? It's as if the spots are cutting a wake through the chromosphere? But should not they be moving with it at the same rate? A filament lies just east of AR13059 and GONG Ha shows a disturbed area just inward of the SE limb. I did not notice that.

The SW limb shows several prominences. I see one with some projections that matches the location of where the large prom was. Could it be the very top of the almost gone prominence, or is it a smaller one following in it's wake? The SE quad shows another that is easily seen.

The mottles are seen across the Ha disc, as usual.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x, 50x and 83x ( WL )
Today I got eleven regions on the WL photosphere! Eight regions in the northern hemisphere with four of these being numbered on the KSO images. Three systems are visible in the southern hemisphere with two showing numbers.

The far NE quadrant shows a small annular shaped facula. WNW of it lies a larger fainter patch of faculae. Well SE of this one just above the equator lies a small line of tiny spots amid faint faculae. SDO HMI continuum shows another tiny facula SE of this system but I did not see it. Further west lies another small system of pores. Just west of this pore system lies AR13060. It appears as a spot being trailed to the NE by some hard to see pores. AR13058 is seen to the NW as a wide scattering of spots/pores with three spots dominating the group. One lies well east of the other two. I think this system is decaying. AR13057 in the NW quadrant shows a nice round penumbraed spot with an umbra that has a projection on it's eastern side. The projection points towards a grouping of spots and pores that are following the larger spot westward. I can see slight mottling in the penumbra at 83x. A close together three tiny spot group amid faculae are seen nearing the NW limb.

AR13056 is a mere scattering of pores amid faculae that is approaching the SW limb. AR13059 I see it as a sizeable spot with an irregular shaped umbra residing within an almost round penumbra. I can see a somewhat lighter area in the penumbra just SE of the umbra at 83x. Four smaller spots are seen east of the bigger one. The three end ones are in a line. I see a new spot barely inside the SE limb! It's highly inclined but I can make out an umbra and penumbra at 83x. It's surrounded by a large patch of faculae.

Again I notice all the smaller spots follow the bigger one. However faculae do not seem to " follow " like the Ha plages do. Hmm... 🤔

The granulation is visible without difficulty today.

Carpe Lumen!

James

Nice report James thanks. I did think about going and observing today but it was just too hot to bother...

You need a remotely operated telescope. SLOOH has one on Teide. It would be useful to get a view in times like that!!

Great observations James :hamster: what do you mean by the "faculae do not seem to " follow " like the Ha plages do"?

I have noticed lately that in Ha the plages always seem to be on the east side of the active regions as their largest spot moves westward across the disc as the Sun rotates. In white light the faculae seem to surround the spot(s) more evenly not lying mainly east of the spot, however in white light the smaller spots follow the larger spot staying to the east of it. I don't know what to think of it.

I haven't been able to find anything on it online. It's just something that has sparked my curiosity.

James

Awesome Mark. Thank you! I need to do more study on it. I wonder how Joy’s Law relates to plage and faculae if any way at all.

My wife would find the name amusing. Her name is Joy.

James.
