Huge Solar Prominence ( 16.07.2022)Refractor H-Alpha 230mm

Post by jp-brahic »

Hello :)

Our star showed us a great activity this week with beautiful filaments that have "snaked" on the surface for several days

one of them to benefit from the sun’s rotation presented us with a beautiful arch :)

I also present to you other HR plans of the chromosphere of last week

Seeing very average because of the heat wave , not simple at this moment to image the Sun

Réfracteur H-Alpha 230mm F/D 27 ( 6200mm)

Filtre H-Alpha Solar Spectrum 0.3A°

That's OK JP, the forum always resizes to fit, folks know to right click on an image and choose 'view in new window' to get the full size version if they want to drool :)

JP,
Do you have a picture of the 230mm refractor you used for these images? It's among the largest here.

Here is a link that shows not only the telescope but also its construction: http://jp-brahic.chez-alice.fr/lunette_230mm.htm. He basically built it from the ground up! This page shows the original setup with a PST etalon.

These are stupendous. What a scope but also what skill to coax these images from that b/c I'll bet a scope like that leaves no room to hide! I particularly like the 4th one. Bravo.

Hello :)

thank you very much for your comments
here is an image of the Solar Telescope H-Alpha , I started its construction in 2012 , since there have been some evolutions, notably the passage of an Astro-Physics 1200 GTO to an AP1600 GTO more comfortable to support the 40 kgs of the optical tube and especially from a PST MOD to a more efficient 0.3A° Solar Spectrum filter , the whole weighs 155 kgs ( 341 lbs )
Image

a video that shows the old set-up in 2013 sorry it’s in French :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oL9aA2U6ra4

the construction is described in the book Solar Astronomy : https://solar-astronomy-book.com/

What a beautiful instrument! You have the third 228mm refractor on SolarChat.

Now will someone here buy a 230mm or 300mm Lunt!! Or a 10" 250mm plus refractor! :-)

thanks
I had the very first H-Alpha 228 mm from Istar, I asked Ales at the time if he could do the optical design for a refractor specialized in the H-Alpha above 200 mm
I have also in recent years a Clearceram Cassegrain Telescope CFF 350 mm F/D 20 with an Aries Triband 312 mm filter, but it is difficult to exploit, for 300mm and more it takes a seeing well below 1" , 0.5" ideally, there are few places in the world where you can reach this level of diurnal seeing, I have a very good home site or sometimes the SSM indicates 0.3", but it never lasts very long!!!
according to my statistics on my observation site, I can use in good conditions my Astro-Physics 155mm 90% of the time, the 230 mm 30%, the CFF 350?? I don’t know, maybe 2% or 3% of the time

That’s a beautiful cassegrain. 350mm is huge for an amateur solar telescope. I know my seeing here would very very rarely ever let me use it in the daytime. But if it did it would be phenomenal. I certainly wish you luck with excellent seeing!!

The AP 155 is a dream scope too. I am surprised you don’t have a Takahashi.
