My session time ( 16:00 until 17:00 UTC ) was a very intermittent session under mostly cloudy skies. I used the SMII60 in single stack ( 16x ) which gives a brighter image so I can penetrate the thinner clouds better. I did not set up a white light scope but used the Lunt 8x32 SUNoculars instead. The temperature was 79F ( 26.1C )
I could see five active regions on the Ha disc with two in the NE quadrant and AR13071 in the SE quadrant with it's spot and plage. AR13068 in the SW quadrant is a long easy patch of plage with a spot at it's western end. Another small easy plage lies just south of the eastern edge of AR13068. I can see a few filaments scattered around the solar disc. Given brief views through and between clouds I did not concentrate much on the active regions but was after the NE prom instead.
The prom on the NE limb has thinned out and is higher above the chromosphere than it was yesterday or the day before. It's brighter portions make it look a bit like a long stretched out X or cross attached to the disc at it's southern end. During moments of clearer skies I can see fainter details within it away from the brighter/thicker areas of plasma. A thin filaprom section is visible with a close look at the attached end of the prom. The end of the filament part is much easier to see than the thin part attaching it to the prom is. At 16x it is hardly visible at all! It looks like the prom could detach from the disc and lift off at any moment! Just to the north of the big prom lies a smaller but much brighter prom and further north a smaller but still easy prominence.
Using the WL SUNoculars I could see the spot of AR13071 in the SE quadrant and two spots associated with AR13068 in the SW.
I had intended to image the NE prom today with the SMII60 and PGR Grasshopper but alas the clouds thwarted my plans. This will have to do I guess.
Carpe Diem!
James
