H-alpha and Ca-K SHG images -- Aug 5

Post by thesmiths »

I think we finally sorted out all the small optical issues that were keeping us from getting good focus across the whole solar disk. Today had fairly clear weather in London, although not the best seeing.

First H-alpha, which typically has the most details. See at full resolution by opening in a new tab.

H-alpha SHG, 720mm focal length, 106mm aperture. 2400 l/mm grating, 9 micron wide slit. Aug 5.

Next, Ca-K, using the same setup as for H-alpha. We forgot to put on the 72mm aperture mask that we used with success last time.

For comparison, here is a normal Ca-K image taken with a Lunt filter with a 80mm f6 APO refractor masked to 50mm aperture.

Here are some closeups. The H-alpha ones were taken from an earlier series than the full disk above.

Absolutely stunning images there Douglas, i'm very impressed! Looking with the Lunt filter and the SHG in CaK and it is quite clear are looking at really quite different height layers on the sun.
