August prom party 2nd and 4th July 2022

Post by Petrus »

Few animations from the first proms I was able to capture in August 2022. Clouds and rainy days kept sunshine away from me mostly, but I tried to use short sessions when possible. Image orientation is not proper and field rotation is apparent due use of AZ mount. This is my choice for short sessions, a bigger EQ mount is a bit troublesome to set up.

I like these two examples about how big or small proms have been lately, also how "spicy" the little one is. Started to practice solar animations this summer, so much fun! Still need to figure out better good tips for PixInSight for balancing the histogram of the frames.

My imaging setup for these was TS Optics 80ED f/7, Optolong IR UV cut filter, Daystar SolarScout 60DS etalon MOD/Quark Chromosphere, ZWO ASI174MM, and Rowan Astronomy tilt-adapter. The mount is iOptron AZ Mount Pro.

Click for link to see the animation.

Beautiful animations Petrus, particularly the one of the large prom! The field rotation doesn’t bother me since the animations are so smooth. I didn’t know if you saw my post on using Pixinsight for balancing the histogram so here is a link to a quick tutorial I put together that you might try. I’d be interested in your results. I have used it mostly for surface animations but in cases of surface and prom shots together I feel it helps reduce the variations fairly well.

Thank you Warren and Brian.

@Warren: Your tutorial was one big reason why I decided to step outside of my comfort zone and get the PixInSight. Torsinadoc has also shared very useful material on the subject, which I must study with a good time.

I had very good results using the histogram balancing during my practices with the close-up view from the disk and proms. I add one below from July, it is short as I did make a mistake having too short an interval between captures. For 4th big problem, it seems the SolarScout etalon reflection issue was too much to handle for PixinSight. This reflection appears as an oval-shaped brightening in some frames.

In this third animation, I used the Hinode Solar guider and AZEQ6 mount. Shaking is due aggressiveness of the correction from Hinode.
One of my tests with the PixinSight histogram balancing.
