'First' solar light with a 400mm newton

Post by allhoest »

I have uncoated a 400mm a few days ago.
At the first trial, the seeing was very bad.
On the second session, the seeing stabilized a bit around 10:45 for a short time.
Here a picture that we could call a 'first' light.
I'll do more trials with this new setup.

Excellent resolution!!! I think you have the biggest solar telescope I have seen here yet.

The intergranular bright point lanes are visible!

Fantastic details.

The former owner will recognize his scope.
The primary holder has been remade, the inner shade removed and the coating removed...

Fantastic first light. I’m excited to see more images in the future.
Do I understand it that this was it not originally built for solar? Do you plan to use it for Ha?

Thank you all for your nice comments.
It is a home made scope, originally made for deep sky and planetary work.
It would be nice to use it for solar, but Ha with uncoated mirror will require exposure time of 25ms or more.

I JUST HAD TO POST A REPLY TO YOUR FANTASTIC CAPTURE ALEX.

ABSOLUTELY ONE (IF NOT THE BEST) CAPTURE I HAVE EVER SEEN.
WHO HAS SAID THAT NEWTONIANS ARE NOT AS GOOD (OR EVEN SUITABLE) FOR SOLAR IMAGING ???

YOU HAVE PROVEN WHAT CAN BE DONE HERE.

THANKS FOR SHARING THIS INTERESTING CAPTURE AND THE MOUNTAIN-VIEW OF THE SCOPE

Alex,
You have me thinking about a full aperture solar filter for my Sky-Watcher 300mm F6. Seeing sucks so bad here though I don't know whether it would be worth the expense and effort though.

Alex: your 400mm Newtonian with stripped mirror made it as desktop image of my office computer :D .

You also gave me a good idea for another scope I have: Christian knows about it.

One last question, Alex: how did you push the Powermate from 5x to 6.6x ?

Thank you all for your comments.
I must confess that the setup isn't easy; my last session was not good.

In order to check the magnification factor, I check the sun edge and use the 'circle' function of the still well serving 'iris'.
Here, the mag factor should be about 6.6.
If you check the barlow on the picture, you will see a significant distance to the camera.
