August 12 2022 Observations. Lots of activity!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

My session time was from 15:50 until 16:40 UTC. The skies are clear with above average seeing! The temperature was 78F ( 25.5C ). Less humid than it has been.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 25x and 33x ( Ha )
I can see eleven active regions in the Ha chromosphere today. Six in the northern hemisphere with three of those having NOAA numbers according to SolarMonitor. The southern hemisphere shows five regions with four regions having numbers.

The NE quadrant shows three regions. Near the limb I see a plage with a fainter disturbance NW of it. An arc of filaments outlines that disturbance to it's west. Further west just east of the CLM lies AR13076. It's a spot within involved plage. A eyebrow shaped filament lies just north of the active region. Just NW of AR13076 lies another area of fainter scattered plage. This is AR13075. Three filaments lie above/north of the AR13075-76 complexes. Further NE near the limb lies a couple of easy larger filaments. I can see two disturbances in the far NW quadrant. The westernmost of these with an involved filament is AR13070. Another disturbance lies just NE of it.

The SW limb shows AR13077 easily as a patch of plage. I can see a filament just SW of it that has a brightening under it. That is not hard to see. A spot can be seen at the northern terminus of the filament. This complex is labeled as AR13071. East of AR13077 lies the large easy scattered plage of AR13074 with a spot at it's SW side. Two easy strings of filaments lie to the S-SW and more still further SW. The SE quadrant shows two regions. AR13078 shows a plage east of a spot. Two very easy dark filaments lie west of it. NE of AR13078 lies a disturbance with two small filaments. It's unnumbered.

I didn't take the time to observe the prominences closely but I can see them circling the disc. I did see an M shaped prom on the eastern limb. Hey, the Sun even has McDonald's!!

The mottles cover the disc wherever plage are absent.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x, 50x, 62.5x and 83x ( WL )
Thirteen regions are visible on the white light photosphere! I can see six regions in the northern hemisphere with three having numbers. Seven are visible in the southern hemisphere with four of these regions having numbers. The sun is quite spotty today and I am surprised on how far off the limb I can still see the faculae. Probably because of the deep blue clear skies and good seeing.

I can see two areas near the NE limb. One has a spot with some hard to see small pores to the NW. Just NW of this system lies a faint patch of faculae. Due west of this system lies AR13076 which shows a spot whose umbra is bridged and fragmented. A shared penumbra surrounds it. I can see a trace of mottling in the penumbra. Smaller spots/pores lie just NW and NNE of the larger spot. The NW ones are involved in penumbrae. A spot is seen in the NW quadrant. I am not sure of it's affiliation with an AR. SM shows it west of AR13075. I didn't notice a plage there in Ha or a spot but the GONG images do indeed show a tiny plage there with a tiny spot that I missed. Two facular patches are seen to it's west.

The SE quadrant shows three active regions. The first two are among scattered faculae nearer the limb. AR13071 shows a spot with umbra and penumbra and AR13077 to it's east shows a spot and 4 pores. To their east AR13074 shows a light bridge in the east side of it's penumbra and I can see some mottling in it's penumbra. Just to it's NE lies an easy scattering of smaller spots. I suspect this is a different system but it is not labeled so. The SE quadrant shows a spot and two pores. This is AR13078. Three faculae are seen to the NE. One of these contains a single large pore.

The fine granulation is easily seen across the disc today!

Happy Friday!! :hamster:

James

Thanks for the report James, there is a lot going on and seems we have a few new spots pepping up too which is a bonus. Have a great weekend.
