Nice first image! I'd probably go for a slightly different colour myself. What does the monochrome version look like?

Hi
A description of the kit used and processing tools used and processing steps taken would help to guide advice.

The monochrome wins hands down, the details are sharper, much more pleasing to the eye.

Re: first image what would you improve (couple tiffs added for anyone to play with)
Hi iwols,
I have tried to deconvolute and sharpen in ImPPG, in either normal or inverted versions, and am getting quite a bit of noise. Did you have the same problem. I can try again later, but it seems noisy. How many frames did you stack, and what was the gain/exposure time ?
What camera was it as well ?

For me everything starts with the raw material and in this case the Raw material are the images as they come out of the camera ...
For me a Tif is already a continuation of this and already manipulated by you.
For me it would be better to have the videos and so take a look at them ...
Another thing is that inverted images are hard to judge.
Look like there is a new trend in Solar imaging because lately a lot of inverted images are presented and honestly I do not like inverted images ... but OK, it is a question of taste. I admit at the very beginning of my Solar imaging I also made inverted images but just out of curiosity but then I stopped as I started to find them ugly ... for my taste ... No offense meant to anybody ...

Re: first image what would you improve (couple tiffs added for anyone to play with)
Hi,
You have developed 2 images: 1 of proms (high exposure) and one of the limbs+proms.
I have found you can get decent images of the proms from only one balanced exposure which shows the disc+proms.
You can bring out the proms with an appropriate change in the tone curve applied in ImPPG. There are some videos on the web which show you this.
One example you can use is Woodlands Hills and Cameras (Simon Tang) and I think AZAstroguy (Mark Johnson, 100mm Lunt Double stack telescope) may also demonstrate this in some of his Solar processing videos (do a search on Youtube).
But this is a good first attempt !

Re: first image what would you improve (couple tiffs added for anyone to play with)
Hi I had a go
Yes image is really noisy probably to much gain, I did the opposite in ImPPG and backed off to smooth out the noise.
I then used unsharp mask in Ps6 with a bit of threshold so I didn't resharpen the noise, I tend to over do the unsharp mask so then use Gaussian blur to bring it back a bit.
I also cropped the light surface areas with lasso and darkened them to flatten the surface.
I used the magic wand to select the prom area (a little to much spinicules) and brightened the proms.
Original capture was probably a little to bright (gain) I go for about 60-70 percent on the histogram in fire capture as I find it easier to brighten the image.
Deconvolution is terrible for sharpening noise, turn it off if the image is noisy.
I didn't use the prom exposure.
I also don't like negative images sorry.

Re: first image what would you improve (couple tiffs added for anyone to play with)
Hi iwols,
Here is my attempt. I only did 2 passes of high pass filter on the disc only, colourised it;; I applied a curves enhancement on proms and then colourised proms+spicule edge separately. Then applied filter: despeckle to reduce noise.

Re: first image what would you improve (couple tiffs added for anyone to play with)
Hi,
Your limb+proms .SER file was: Gain=247
Exposure=5.6260ms;; FPS=26
Your proms .SER file was: Gain=400
Exposure=5.6260ms;; FPS=13
I think the problem was: gain was too high. Exposure can be increased up to about 10ms or slightly more.
Your higher gain makes the images noisier.
Also: your FPS is slow.
Question:
What laptop are you using ? Processor ? and what hard disc. I think a fast SSD (NVME M2.SSD) is vital to get to the next level. I found this out. A slow hard disc cannot capture images fast enough. No matter how good your filter and setup work, you will not get the data you need.

thanks i am using a very quick laptop the fps is probably due to my scope being in my obsy at the bottom of the garden and everything runs through usb over lan.maybe as you say i should increase my exposure time to decrease my gain ,i tended to keep it around 5/6 ms and adjust the gain to get about 70-80 0n the hystogram probably the wrong thing to do thanksRadon86 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 16, 2022 8:28 am Hi,

Hi iwols,
Why not connect your camera directly to the laptop ? Any other connection will render it much less effective.

Hi,
I finally took a bit of time and here is my result processing your ser files in the same way I process my AVI files.
The prominence result is very noisy. as somebody already said crank down a bit your gain and increase a bit the exposure time.
I did not do anything in Photoshop and there is also too much noise.

I did take a second chance on it and tweaked it a bit to my liking
The noise kills lot of detail.

Noise is certainly a detail killer. Right there, Rainer. I often have noise issues on single frame captures. Stacked images are better.
