August 14 2022 Imaging Session. 540nm Photosphere.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

My session time was from 14:00 until 15:30 UTC. The skies were partly cloudy and the seeing was fluctuating considerably. Overall below average. The temperature was 69F ( 20.5C ). I used the Celestron 102 for medium and close up shots and the Orion70 for full disc shots. The Camera was the Point Grey Grasshopper Firewire camera with a Baader 540nm filter installed in the nosepiece. Acquisition and editing/processing software is ASTRO IIDC and GIMP on a MacBook Pro computer. I did no imaging for the first 30min until the clouds cleared.

Here are the images.

Very nice especially considering the conditions.

The seeing varied a lot. Even to the point where one part of the disc would be sharp and another not. Like waves in a pond that changed rapidly. It was easily seen in the monitor.

That's exactly how I'd describe my usual conditions , it's very rare I get frames that are crisp and detailed across all AR's when they are scattered all across the disc such as they are at present.

It is why I painstakingly go through my captured DSLR frames by eye in order to select the very best ones to stack , rather than relying on some bit of software to do the selection which I've always found lets all sorts of poor frames slip through the net.

Steve,

Seeing seems to affect me while imaging worse than it does visually. I have learned with visual that you seize those brief moments of steady seeing to observe fine details. And with my setup I cannot do long AVI or MOV files which would help me with the seeing conditions better when it came to frame stacking. Having altazimuth and unguided mounts limits my video lengths so I am stuck with 300 frame or less files and/or single frame captures. But I work with what I have.

I didn't realize you used a DSLR for your images. Hey, it works fine on white light and with some effort as John has proven they can be used for Ha too, just as a smartphone can.

Going through all your images by eye has to be tedious. Do you take the shots the usual way or run the camera in a video mode and then take apart the video in some way to examine the individual frames? But that usually takes software to do. Hmm... 🤔

James

Individual frames , I did "upgrade" to the 1100D (FROM THE 1000D) years ago for its video mode , but quickly learnt that (A) the 'video' was just a stream of highly compressed jpegs from the Liveview which was pointless to use compared with the RAW frames and (B) you couldn't capture video tethered to the laptop but could only save to the SD card.

Needless to say I sent it back and continue to use the 1000D/Rebel XS to this day (later Canons with the DIGIC IV processor don't work with my set-up)

It takes a while to go through the frames but not too long , I shoot 4-6 sets of 120 frames on days when the blue bits are big enough but some days considerably less.

Nice work James,
also cool setup picture, looks like a cozy place to image the sun.

Excellent images James, on one of the them you have some really lovely granulation, you must be pleased with that one :bow :hamster: I enjoyed these spots through the Sunoculars.

Thanks everyone for your comments and input. Thanks Alexandra you have good eyes and yes Dennis it’s a cozy place to observe and image. I miss it in the winter when the Sun is too low to use it.
