August 15 2022 Observations. M1.02 and M2.73 Flares!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

My session time was from 14:45 until 15:55 UTC. The skies are partly cloudy with fair/average seeing. The temperature is 78F ( 25.5C )

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
Today I got nine active regions in the Ha chromosphere. Four in the northern hemisphere with the KSO images showing two of these to be numbered systems. The southern hemisphere shows five systems with KSO showing three of these having numbers.

The NE quadrant shows AR13081 as a plage lying eastward of a couple of spots. A half-ring broken filament lies NE of it and further east still lies a very tiny but surprisingly easy to see bright pointlike plage. Two filaments lie north of the tiny plage. A string of easy filaments is seen in the far north. West of AR13081 lies another broken crescent of filaments. The NW quadrant shows the plage of AR13076. West of it lies another plage beneath a filament. A small filament lies close to the NW limb.

Two active regions lie in the SW quadrant. AR13074 is a fairly faint plage with a spot. Just NE of it lies AR13079 with a brighter plage and a spot. A filament lies SW of AR13074 and a very easy one lies well southeast of AR13079. AR13078 lies on the CLM and is visible as a bright S-shaped plage. An M1.02 flare occurs here maxing at 14:30 UTC so I got the backside of it. The flare went from the spot's north side to the south. A brighter repeat performance happened at 16:54 UTC running me back outside to the scopes which I had left in place just in case. It rated as an M2.73 and is seen north of the spot. It's bright and easy to see. Well east of the active AR13078 lies a double plage in the SE quad. I counted them as one region guessing them to be magnetically one. The far east shows a single small plage near the limb. A filament also lays just above the pole in the far south.

I paid little attention to the few small proms present around the limb.

The mottles are easily seen.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I can see seven active regions on the continuum photosphere today. Two in the northern hemisphere with both having numbers. Five regions are visible in the southern hemisphere with three showing numbers on the KSO images.

The NE quadrant shows an easy double spot group. It looks like two regions but the KSO and SolarMonitor images shows it only as one. It's numbered as AR13081. Penumbrae are involved with two of the spots. Well WNW of it lies AR13076 in the NW quad. It's seen as two rows of tiny spots and pores with barely visible tiny ones to the east at 50x. SDO shows another small pore well west of AR13076 but I didn't see it. I totally overlooked it.

The SW quadrant shows the active regions of AR13074-AR13079 close together. AR13074 is a double-umbra spot sharing a penumbra and AR13079 is an elongated double-umbra spot with penumbra and smaller spots/pores to the NW. Faculae can be seen around both of these regions. Looking at AR13078 on the CLM I can see why it's producing flares. It's a triangle of close together interacting spots and pores! A line of tiny pores can be seen at it's NE side. Two patches of faculae can be seen near the SE limb.

The granulation can be seen today but is not overly apparent.

James

I missed both beginnings of the flares, i was still setting up when the M1 went off, and when i packed up and went back inside, the M2.7 went off

Simon. I didn't catch the beginning either. I caught it just after maximum on the first one and right at maximum on the second. SWL rarely alerts you fast enough to catch a flare early on. I was at the ready and still set up to get the second.

The annoying part was, i was doing a time lapse of 3078 and stopped at around 9.30am PT cuz road works was getting ready to start. The vibrations are too much so i stopped. Of course the M2.7 goes off not long after i got back inside!

Fate always seems to work against our favor doesn’t it? With me it’s usually clouds or the seeing.

I bet you were at work and even if you had the SUNoculars they are no use for flares. :-(
