Various active regions and prominences taken today 2022.08.14

Post by MichaelTeoh »

Only managed to complete the h-alpha session before it became cloudy. Seeing condition was average. Transparency was not good, as there were thin clouds all over the sky.

Nice shots Michael!

Are your images you are sharpening in 16bit?

Thanks Mark.

The capture was in 8 bit. After stacking with AS!3, it become 16 bit.

Thanks Alexandra.

Btw, you mentioned in another post that Registax is terrible for solar and lunar. I've heard about ImPPG for quite some time but had never really tried it. Inspired by your comment, I reprocessed some of these images above using ImPPG, as well as a few of my best images from the past, but to my disappointment, they didn't end up much better compared to the result I get with Registax. The only obvious differences I see on the ImPPG results are that they have better dynamic range, and the contrast is slightly different.

Have you played about with the number of iterations and unsharp mask?

Unsharp mask yes, iteration no. I follow a few tutorials I found on Youtube, they don't mention adjusting iteration, only the sigma and amount.

Here is one of the file (after stack), feel free to try your way of processing, then I can see what could be achieved.

Thanks Alexandra.

I see a lot of people producing images that look like yours, probably due to the same processing method being used. But personally they look a bit too soft to my liking.

Anyway, how do you determine the four parameters, i.e. the sigma for the L-R deconvolution, the iterations (suggested value between 30-70), and the unsharp marking's sigma and value?

Thanks.

Hi, here is my quick take on it close to Alexandras. I guess everyone has his own style and taste. I prefer imppg and photoshop for this.

There are no hard lines on the Sun, it is soft plasma. Plasma cannot have a hard line due to its nature, but it can have structure. If you sharpen too much all you are doing is presenting image artefacts and not solar structure. If you have perfect seeing conditions or larger aperture you will see more structure in the plasma. But you cannot create structure by over sharpening / artefacts.

However, everyone has their own personal taste, but I prefer to sharpen the structure only, once I reach the point where it becomes artefact I stop. You have to play around with the sliders until you are happy, there are no fast rules and everyone will go about this in their own way. My goal is to try and keep it a true representation (the scientist in me) to what I saw. I watch the video closely, then try to match the video and times of perfect seeing that my eyes see to the final image. If what you see is what you present then that is fine :) equally, if you present something which is nothing like what you saw then that is fine too, it is personal taste and only you know want you want to achieve.

Here is my take on it (just in ImPPG). Make sure you check 'cropped' in AS3, it gets rid of the artefacts on the edges.

I always use "Expand" and crop afterwards, because I keep my images in 2:3 ratio, sometimes I will need some parts to fulfill that, which will otherwise be cropped during stacking.

Hi Pedro, attached below is a picture of the scope and the setup. I use it without an ERF (can't afford one).

Hi Franco, it's the roof top of a 8-story building, so the space was not much of a concern when they build the observatory.

I see a few friends in the photos of the courses :)

The scopes are working relatively well after 11 years. The only major issue was replacing the board in the Paramount ME in 2014. Then starting a few months ago, the joystick won't home properly.

Thanks for your reply Michael. I also have experienced a few issues with my paramounts ME. I had to replace the boards several times. Fortunately I have a friend that was able to repair the boards.
