YouTube Presentation on collecting solar data and processing

Post by Hughsie »

In early June 2022 I was asked by my local astronomy club if I would like to give a presentation on my process for acquiring solar data.

Having never done anything like this before I decided to take up the challenge and put something together that not only included the acquisition of data but also what I do with it afterwards. Out of this came the video below which has been posted to the Orwell Astronomical (Ipswich) YouTube Channel.

https://youtu.be/mw7RVGSAlG4

There the video has sat for 2 months now and I have finally decided to share it here. I would rather my images do the talking than me but if someone finds something useful here then I class that as job done.

All the best

John

Wow, this looks really great help for new solar imagers and everyone who needs some reminder after long pause - for example me after long winter :)

Thank you for sharing such resourceful information, John!

Excellent resource John! I'll leave it here for a couple of days to get a bit more coverage and then move it to the solar reference library.

Thanks for the link John, great resource!
I’ve just invested in Affinity Photo so the processing part about an hour in was particularly helpful.
Have you tried stacking on it?

Hi Nic. I came into solar photography having spent most of my time deep sky imaging. Affinity Photo wasn’t geared up like it is now for deep sky astrophotography so when I was looking for processing software I went with PixInsight and continued to use this for solar processing as well.

When considering the structure of the video and it’s content I chose to use Affinity Photo for processing solar images as not many of my fellow club members use PixInsight. Seemed sense to present using processing tools that are more accessible price wise and so would benefit a wider audience. That left me with a learning curve so for about a month I was processing solely in Affinity Photo.

AP has a lot of good tools and allows approaches not possible in PixInsight but in answer to your question, no, I haven’t tried stacking with AP. Does it stack both solar, lunar and deep sky or just the latter?

Ah I see. I only use a Mac so I got AP to do mosaics and for other workflow improvements I can’t do with GIMP.
The AP tutorial just shows stacking of deep sky.
I’ll give it a try for Solar then, see what happens!
