1st Jupiter of the Season8

Post by MapleRidge »

Hi all...

I made it out to do some imaging of Jupiter on the night of Aug 26th after having the C14 reinstalled in the big observatory. The session was run in the early morning hours local time, and the images were a great treat for the first session of the apparition...good seeing for a change ;)

Posted below are a set of RGB, IR+RGB, and IR680nm filtered images taken through the C14 at prime focus and the ASI462MC camera (operated in mono mode) to give better control over the RGB frames. I hate the fact this chip is only available, as the IR QE is well above 90% which makes it work wonders int he IR and Methane filtered images with much shorter exposures than the ASI290MM which was used in the past.

Some capture refinements to sort out again after 8 months without decent planetary targets, but I hope you like them ;)

Great pictures Brian :bow :hamster: sounds like a lovely session. Do you see much wildlife whilst imaging at night?

Thanks Alexandra...

As for seeing wildlife at night, it is rare...usually limited to the odd raccoon or skunk in the yard while walking between house and observatory. I dislike both around the buildings, but I hate the skunks and the risk of walking into one in the night (even with a flashlight) makes me cringe. Most often it is the sounds of grasshoppers at this time of year, and coyotes/wolves can be heard throughout the year. Besides that, I can sometimes hear the neighbors cattle or horses through the night too, but not often.

We do have a few bears in the neighborhood, but I'm not keen to meet them in the day or night :o I'd hate to have to carry the shot gun to observing sessions ;)

Hi Brian,

Nice work on Jupiter !
I am also working on Jupiter on a 150mm basic Newtonian reflector.

Your C14 is a massive telescope. I hope you enjoy your Jupiter imaging.

Magnus
