Disks in WL, CaK and Ha and animation of NW Limb 9/13/2022

Post by rigel123 »

The animation was recorded between 15:50 - 16:34 UTC and is a bit skippy due to having to pause recordings to let the big, fluffy, annoying cumulus clouds to pass! Stuff was happening quickly and I finally gave up as the gaps between clouds got smaller so I simply caught the full disk shots when I could. It appears that some post flare loops deteriorate and are replaced by some additional surge spikes in the animation.

Nice disks Warren! Are you using the Orion at 80mm for the CaK with the 174 camera?

Thanks all! Mark, yes I was shooting at 80mm. I actually made a 40mm mask and compared the images on some earlier captures and really could not see a difference so just stopped using it.

Hi Warren. You won't see a difference, you're hugely undersampling with the 174 with CaK full disks at a focal length of 600mm, your actual resolution you will achieve is closer to 20mm (properly sampled). Now i'm not suggesting you make a 20mm aperture stop, but stopping the scope down (40mm if you have a mask of that size) will redude spherical aberation which will reduce softeness (that is what SA does in CaK) in the image. Don't expose the histogram more than about 90% in capture either.

HTH!

Mark
