SOLAR300 Continuum - AR13089 sunspot with a strange flash

Post by Laszlo Francsics »

AR13089 sunspot with a small and sudden flash. Can it be a small fler in Ca-K?
Monochrome and color processing.

The small flash (took about 30 minutes) was visible on the live video and on the raw stack as well.

Top shot! One of our other members of the forum has reported a very similar thing in another active region recently, in white light, maybe these things are more common than we might think...

Hi, thank you for your kind comments!

This flash must be a common phenomenon, however, it was unusall for me.

That's absolutely terrific :bow :bow :bow I have caught one of these before and asked the Kanzelhohe team, they reckoned it was a bright penumbral grain viewtopic.php?t=35468
Like a mini flare.

It is very exciting to see and quite rare but much more common than a true WL flare.

Laszlo,
This is with a wide band CaK filter, right?

It looks like a small flare to me. The reason I asked about the filter is that flares should be considerably easier to see in CaK than in continuum. A flare has to be unusually intense to be seen in white light.

Great catch!

James

Is a penumbral grain the same as a flare kernel? I hear flare kernels are visible in narrowband Sodium filters. A flare kernel may be where the flare is rooted to the photosphere? :?

Hi, thank you very much for your kind comment. The bright penumbral grain is new for me, I have to understand what it is exactly, thank you for the idea.
I agree, that it couldn't be a WL flare. I have checked the flares, and only C8-C9 class flares appeared at that time in the region. They are to weak to appear in WL.

Hi, thank you!
yes, it is a wide band CaK, 10 nm.
I have a feeling, that it worked simultaneously with another bright area in the other sunspot in the middle, but I can't prove it.
