Indirect colourful sunlight after coming back

Post by H-Alpha »

Dear all,

This is mostly to say hi after an absence from solar activity for a couple of months.
Hope you are all well.

I was offshore for our sperm whale expedition, but since I came back I am absorbed by the giant planets, since Jupiter approaches a great opposition this month. It is already hard for me to process all the captured data and I am sleeping at 8 am after imaging..., so even if I very much want to follow the solar activity as well, it is humanly impossible.

Nevertheless, I think it is worthy to share with you what I succeeded last week, since I realized that my new C14 Edge can do miracles! I dedicated all my vacation the last 15 days and nights in chasing good seeing in two consecutive nights, which is very rare where I live. On both the 21st and 22nd of August I was lucky enough to have good seeing. I started to compose a full map of Jupiter to create an animation of the planet's full rotation. Not even in my deepest dreams, I could ever imagine that one day I could have such a result as the one below! Tutorials and kind advises by Damian Peach and Christopher Go helped improve my techniques. I am a happy planet-man now!

I used the C14 Edge, Celestron Barlow 1.6x, ASI 290 camera, RGB filters. In total, 293 captures (videos) consisting of almost 1.5 million frames (before discarding the worst) were processed to achieve the full map and animation of Jupiter. The photos were taken from my veranda (southern suburbs of Athens), Greece. :-)

The GIF Animation and the full map of Jupiter:

And here two photos of Saturn that are also worthy to share:

Image2022-08-30, Saturn and 7 satellites, C14 Edge, ASI 290, 21_28_24 UTC by H- Alpha, on Flickr

Hope you will enjoy them and also hope to return to imaging our sun soon (likely after Jupiter's opposition by the end of this month).

Best wishes,
Alexandros

PS: By the way, do you know if there are any news regarding Baader solar filters for C14 that many of us wanted to have?

Holy S&I#T!! These are INCREDIBLE!!! They look almost like medium distance orbital shots! I still find it amazing what amateurs, if you can call you that. They look very pro to me, can do today.

Two thumbs and two toes up!! 👍🏻👍🏻 :hamster: :bow :bow

I am starting to think about getting a Celestron Edge HD SCT vs a larger refractor. They are impressive!

Alexandros, your animation is simply amazing, when I first saw these frames, I thought it was a repost of images of space observatories, but then when I realized that these were your pictures, I was speechless. You are a brilliant photographer! It's absolutely amazing. It's a masterpiece.

:band :band

I don’t remember D. Peach have this type of long animation.

Good result, scarcely believable!

Maybe you should back up your data and submit it to Astronomy photograph competition!

Magnus are you referring to some specific animation?
I submitted it (it was something new for me) for NASA APOD, but I was unlucky because the same day the photos of the Webb teleskope of Jupiter was submitted as well...

Thanks a anyway!

Best wishes,
Alexandros

Hello Alexandros,

You cannot really compete with the Webb telescope…

I mean you should submit your Jupiter work for “Astronomy Photographer of the Year”. There are cash prizes for winners. The result came out only 2 weeks ago.
D. Peach had a Jupiter animation but I think it was for great red spot moving across the hemisphere, not a 360 rotation video.

Hello H-alpha,

Any chance of some info about the Jupiter animation?
How many frames did you need for it altogether ?
What was the time interval between 1 frame and the next ? (1 minute or 2,3 minutes).

What frames per second did you run the animation ?

Many thanks.

Magnus
