September 22 2022 Observations. Autumnal Equinox.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

My session time today was from 14:41 until 15:30 UTC. Clear skies with below average seeing. The temperature is a summer-like 80F ( 26.6C )

The Sun crosses the celestial equator today into the southern part of the celestial sphere marking the Autumnal Equinox for the northern hemisphere and the Vernal Equinox for the southern hemisphere. It takes place at 9:03 pm EDT ( US ) or 01:03 UTC ( Sept 23 ). Happy Autumn, or Spring everyone, depending where you are!!

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
I can see at least six active regions in the Ha chromosphere today. One in the northern hemisphere and five in the southern hemisphere. All are bearing NOAA numbers.

AR13109 is visible as a plage near the disc center but in the lower east of the NW quadrant. Well NW of it I can make out a small slightly lighter area in the chromosphere. It shows up on the KSO and GONG ha images too.

AR13102 is visible in the SW quadrant as a plage bisected by a filament E-W. Just west of the plage is a darker easier filament. The spots are easily seen by off-tuning a bit. AR13108 is seen just east of the CLM as a plage. Two filaments lie SE of it. One close by is a curved shape and further SE is a semicircular loop. AR13105-06-07 appears as a long complex of plages and spots coming off the SE limb. It's bright and easy.

I can see most of the prominences shown on the GONG CTIO Ha image. I can see treelike proms on the SE and WNW limb.

The usual mottles cover the Ha disc today.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x, 50x and 62.5x ( WL )
Eight active regions can be seen on the WL photosphere today! Two in the northern hemisphere, one numbered and six in the southern hemisphere with all six bearing numbers.

AR13109 in the NW quadrant shows seven small spots/pores in my small refractor at 62.5x. Far to the NW near the limb I can make out a patch of low contrast faculae.

The faculae of AR13103 can be seen near the SW limb. ESE of it lies the spot group of AR13102. I can see three sizeable spots bearing umbra-penumbra form. The two westernmost ones are close together. Two smaller spots are at the SE side of the group. I can glimpse a few smaller pores during moments of better seeing. I can see five small spots/pores in AR13108 in the SE quadrant. The complex of AR13105-06-07 is easily seen in the SE quadrant as a slightly bent line of spots. All lack symmetry and have fragmented umbrae surrounded by irregular penumbrae. The spot of AR13107 has a deep gap in it's penumbra. A bright patch of faculae lies south-east of AR13107 and has a single pore in it. I wonder if this patch may develop further.

The fine granulation of the photosphere can be seen but not that well.

Carpe Lumen!

James

Thanks for the great report James, yes there are some interesting loop shaped filaments, or horseshoes, maybe a pony walked across the Sun
