September 27 2022 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 14:33 until 15:41 UTC. The seeing is extremely variable going from poor to average. It's below average to poor most of the time. Clear skies. The temperature at 15:00 UTC is a cool 59F ( 15C ). Breezy.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
I can see seven active regions in the Ha chromosphere today. Four in the northern hemisphere with two being numbered ( SpaceWeatherLive ) and three in the southern hemisphere with all being numbered ( SWL )

A spot can be seen in the far NE with hardly any plage. Off-tuning a bit makes the spot easier to see. SE of this area but still in the NE quadrant lies AR13110. It's large spot lying west of the plage can be seen. ESE of the plage lies an easy filament. During very brief moments of better seeing a couple of other associated filaments can be glimpsed above the plage at 25x. A small plage can be seen in the NW quadrant well past the CLM. It is hard to see. Another smaller one is shown SE of it on the GONG El Teide Ha image. Seeing obliterated any chance of me seeing it. The plage of AR13109 is visible near the WNW limb but is difficult to see. A polar crown of filaments is visible in the far north but poor seeing makes it surprisingly hard to see.

AR13108 can be seen nearing the SW limb. A crescent shaped filament trails it. East of AR13108 lies AR13105. I see it as an easy plage with a bent filament emanating from it going south and then bending eastward. Just SE of AR13105 lies AR13107 which is seen as an easy patchy plage. Two easy filaments lie easterly of AR13107 with a larger wavy one further NE oriented E-W.

I notice only a few small proms around the limb. I paid little attention to them.

The mottles are visible across the disc but are generally soft due to the seeing conditions.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I can see six active regions on the continuum photosphere today. Three in the northern hemisphere with two having numbers ( SWL ). The southern hemisphere shows three active regions to my small refractor with all three bearing labels. ( SWL ).

A spot with accompanying faculae is seen in the far NE. AR13110 is seen well SW of it but is still in the NE quadrant. It appears as a large spot with a cloud of pores just east of it. Only in moments of better seeing can I see the umbra and penumbra of the larger spot, most of the time it's just a blur! The same is true with the pore cloud. Only in brief moments of better seeing can I see some of it's members individually. SDOHMI high rez shows a pore west of the big spot and another SW of the big spot but seeing won't even come close to letting me see those and they would be challenging for this small scope even in good seeing. AR13109 is visible as a facula very near the WNW limb. It takes a close look to see. Even faculae visibility is being affected by the seeing.

AR13108 is visible as faculae in the SW quadrant. SDO HMI high rez shows three pores there but I cannot see them. AR13105 is seen as a string of spots in the SW quadrant. Three are clearly visible with the largest trailing the group. During moments of better seeing several additional pores can be seen. AR13107 to the SE of AR13105 shows a larger stream of spots. Most of the time seeing does not permit a good view but during brief moments of better seeing I can see penumbra involved with the western members of the group. Both AR13105 and AR13107 seem to be weakening. SDO HMI shows a low contrast patch of faculae near the SE limb but I cannot see it.

The granulation is totally invisible today, or at least I never noticed it.

Carpe Diem!!

James

P.S. It's a good thing I did not choose to image today. Seeing would have trashed my images!
