CaK spectroheliogram 220929

Post by Alun_H »

Using my Lhires III with 15um slit and 1200l/mm grating and QHY5III 178M to carry out a solar scan yesterday afternoon in the calcium K line with the Evostar 72ED (stopped own to 40mm) and neutral density filter. Forced the scan using x16 speed rate on the CEM60,reconstructed in SER_MAIN and added slight wavelet treatment in Astrosurface.

This is very good Alun! Post a pic of the setup when you get chance.

Thank you Mark. I'll take a few photos of the rig today and post them later.

Most people might have missed that you changed the grating to 1200 l/mm from the 2400 l/mm you used for H-alpha. I also found using a "weaker" grating for Calcium in general gave somewhat better results. I did even try using the 1200 l/mm grating once in second order to image H-alpha. This required using an H-alpha filter to eliminate the first order spectrum. But the loss of light in second order was too much of an impediment, I found.

I currently have 1200 l/mm (ruled). 1800 l/mm (ruled) and 2400 l/mm (holographic) gratings. I almost always use the 2400 l/mm grating but probably the 1800 l/mm one does give better results overall for Calcium. First of all, there is a higher flux arriving at the sensor, which allows fast exposure (and lower camera gain). Secondly, the somewhat lower contrast means that the bright features are not as easily oversaturated.

I agree with what you say about the Calcium and the 1200l/mm,I was struggling with the 2400l/mm and a lot of the captured data ended up in the delete bin,but the 1200 seems to tame the blue end. The other reason for my selecting the 1200 is I want to give the Ca II at 8542.1 a go and the 2400 will not rotate that far on the Lhires.

Eventually I will have to get round to building a Solex using wood,or as you did Douglas, with foam card as I don't have a 3D printer since now that the darker skies are back the Lhires will be set up in the observatory on my C9.25 and I don't want to keep breaking it down, swapping out the cameras etc
I will base the Solex on an 1800l/mm and get myself a single 10um slit or one of the variable slits either from Edmundoptics or Thorlabs rather than use a glass mirror plate as I am now,the Hoya neutral density filter seems to be keeping the plate safe but I am still hesitant that I am going to hear a crack

Actually no 2400 l/mm grating can access that far into the IR. I have tried that wavelength a few times without much success. It's quite challenging.

I would be careful about using wood as it can end up being quite heavy. Maybe some quite thin plywood would be both strong and light enough. The ideal material would be some kind of composite (maybe fibreglass?).

With regards to a slit, you could try one of my chrome on fused quartz slits. If you are interested, send me a PM.

Normally yes the 2400l/mm can see that far but because of the design of the grating carrier in the Lhires it won't,my bad for not being clearer with my choice of words,I should say it won't tilt rather than rotate.

Local Hobby store stocks various sized sheets of 3-6 ply plywood which I have used in the past,of which I'd forgot about so thank you for mentioning the ply, never really worked with fibreglass so can just imagine the mess I'd end with!

Thank you I am very interested in the chrome slit, will PM you nearer the time when I start the project.
