Active coolers for sun cameras Apollo and Saturn
The sun is behind the clouds, so at least I made active coolers for sun cameras. It maintains a temperature of about 3-4 degrees Celsius above the surrounding environment, which is sufficient to protect the chips. After an hour, the temperature settles just below 30 degrees Celsius. Interestingly, the IMX 432 produces more heat than the IMX 533.

Hello pupak,
Are these available from teleskop express-eu ?
It would be helpful to know how these work and how to connect to a camera!
Thank you.

The cooler is connected via the central 6.35mm thread, which is in the camera. This will ensure better heat transfer. It is my own production.

I love the idea. I was trying to simulate the best geometry for airflow in this application, but got lost in the complexity of the simulation program...
Great job. I like the design!

It's not about what's ideal, it's about what's reasonably manufacturable. The differences in function are then usually minimal.

Re: Active coolers for sun cameras Apollo and Saturn
Are the electronics and sensor thermally bonded to the camera body on ZWOs?
The camera body has only very limited cooling fins. [Purely cosmetic?] Which are placed some distance from the sensor.
If camera cooling was really a high priority then the entire body would be finely finned to increase the surface area.
Or the fins placed closer to the sensor and electronics near the front of the body.
That said, their camera's use for solar imaging, in larger apertures, is only a small part of their production.
No doubt the vast majority of their cameras are naturally chilled by their night time surroundings.

Re: Active coolers for sun cameras Apollo and Saturn
I am also trying ASI174M with a larger diameter. It is evident that the ZWO camera does not have a thermal bridge between the chip and the body. However, the cooler will reduce the temperature of the chip from 42.6 to 35.1 degrees. Celsius at an ambient temperature of 26 degrees Celsius. This is important for chip protection. Every degree counts.

Hi,
Do you have short exposure data to compare the noise character when on/off?
Very best,

Re: Active coolers for sun cameras Apollo and Saturn
I don't think this cooler brings a noticeable reduction in noise, but it safely protects the chip from high temperatures in the hot summer months.

Re: Active coolers for sun cameras Apollo and Saturn
Were there repeatable issues from overheating? What were the symptoms?
Very best,

Re: Active coolers for sun cameras Apollo and Saturn
They occurred. Two of my friends literally baked their cameras on the AR150/F6 in July with just the D-ERF and Quark combo.

What about putting a pletier between passsive cooler and camera

Re: Active coolers for sun cameras Apollo and Saturn
I tried the Peltier. The temperature is about -10 degrees Celsius lower, which is not of fundamental importance and is a more complicated solution. It's not about noise reduction, it's about protecting the chip from being overplayed. For effective Peltier cooling, the cooler would have to be significantly larger.
