A nice surprise! 10/5/2022

Post by rigel123 »

I have to catch up on processing multiple images and animations from yesterday when I had wonderful seeing and transparency conditions for most of the time, but wanted to post this animation first as it demonstrates what you might catch unexpectedly when focusing on one particular region for an extended period of time. This was the last animation I captured for the day and I set it up to capture the proms on the SE Limb as the most northern prom in the image (far right in this 180 degree rotated image for viewing) was quite bright and I thought might make an interesting animation. I started the captures and then went and had lunch and would check on things about every 15 minutes or so and could tell there were changes but nothing like I expected when I finally put the animation together! This occurred over 1 hour between 15:04 and 16:12 UTC. Lunt LS60T DS, ASI174MM and Meade 3X TeleXtender.

Superb.

That prom looked so small in the scope. Your image of our planet next to it shows how tiny our planet is on a solar scale. It’s easy to forget that when examining solar features.

Thanks Petrus and Carlo! Indeed James, I am always amazed at the size of these events, and this was a relatively small one!
