Daystar "Camera" Quark ... any users out there ... ?

Post by steveward53 »

Having just bought a Sigma 150-600mm lens for everyday photography and 'snatch and grab' solar imaging it has crossed my mind that it might be the missing link to my never-ending pondering about which route to take on the Hydrogen Alpha route.

I could team it up with a Canon fit "Camera Quark" for both full disc viewing around 400mm and closer in at 600mm.

It comes with a Canon adapter as well so a DSLR will fit (aware of the obvious resolution issues regarding a RGGB colour sensor) as well as the 174MM that I have here awaiting a debut.

Quark is the way I was leaning Ha-wise but the 4.2x Barlow would have meant faffing about between 'scopes to get a full disc scenario whereas a simple zoom in or out to suit with one lens sounds like the simple (too simple?) solution.

The 150-600 has a front aperture of 95mm which is another plus point over a separate short FL small aperture 'scope like a 50-60mm finderscope that would be needed for a full disc with the Quark normally.

So if anyone has any experience with the "Camera Quark" and could forward any advice one way of the other I'd be eternally grateful.

Regards ,

Steve.

Steve,
I have seen it mentioned a time or two on here but is generally discouraged because of the DSLR's color sensor. Still, I would NOT discourage you. Given skill and persistence a DSLR can be used for Ha imaging. John has proven that and uses a DSLR for all of his Ha work and does well.

Still, I don't know anyone here who has a camera quark. If you are DSLR oriented and don't wish to go the route of a video imaging camera it may be worth a shot.

I have an Altair Hypercam 174M Mono Fan Cooled camera here awaiting it's debut Ha-wise that a good friend and excellent imager did me a very good deal on , so that side is all sorted awaiting my dithering to cease ...

Nice!! The Altair camera should serve you well. I have an Altair Herschel wedge and it does superbly.

There was a thread here a couple of years back started by your good self sir. viewtopic.php?t=27227

The answers in it weren't overly helpful as they all jumped on the DSLR aspect which everyone is already aware of and ignored the front-end component , which seems a very interesting option to me with it's variable focal length and focal ratio adjustable from f5 fully open right down to f22 so getting something right for the 174mm should be easy I'd guess.

WoW, I remember that post but I had totally forgotten that I had started it. I wish John would have chimed in on that one. He's taken better DSLR Ha images than anyone I have seen on here. White light is certainly easier. I have never seen CaK DSLR imaging discussed, at least to my memory.

I spoke to Gary about it recently and he said it worked fine , I'm just a tad concerned about the lens internals , if I need an ERF to protect the lens it makes a whole new ball ache.

Going to call Daystar on Wednesday and see if I can get any sense out of them on the subject ... ;)

Did Gary mention anything about the lens requiring an ERF?

DayStar should certainly know. Good luck.
