November 17 2022 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

My session time was from 16:17 until 17:06 UTC. The skies are clear with poor seeing though the seeing did improve a bit by session's end. The temperature is a cold 36F ( 2.2C ) The seeing seems to affect white light worse than the long 656.28nm wavelength of hydrogen-Alpha.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
I can see all nine active region plages as shown on the GONG El Teide image! Four of these are seen in the northern hemisphere with two of these being numbered on the BBSO Solar Monitor images. The southern hemisphere shows five plages with SM showing two with NOAA numbers.

Two plages can be seen in the NE quadrant. One near the NE limb and another just east of the CLM. A filament lies north of a line drawn between them. AR13146 is seen as a plage across the CLM in the NW quadrant. A small filament is located NE of it. A broken line of polar crown filaments can be seen in the far north. West of a line of filaments I can see the plage and limb disturbances of AR13140-45 on and at the NW limb. The plage takes a bit of study to see but is definitely visible as a lighter place at the shown position.

The SE quadrant shows three plages all close together. Two of these are associated with filaments. A curved prominence is seen on the limb near the southern most of these regions ( AR13148 ). Otherwise I did not study proms much today though I seen several smaller ones around the limb. The northernmost of the SE regions ( AR13147 ) shows a spot with the brighter part of the plage NW of it. The third unnumbered system appears as a brightening around and under a filament. An easy thin filament is seen in the center of the disc. The SW quadrant shows two plages. One just west of the CLM and the other is just NW of an easy crescent-shaped filament. Another filament is seen just SW of the crescent one and a polar crown skirts the southern limb though it's easier seen on the GONG images than it is visually.

The mottles are visible but are a bit soft.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x, 41.5x and 50x ( WL )
I can see five active regions on the white light photosphere today. Three of these are in the northern hemisphere but only two of these are numbered. Two are seen in the southern hemisphere and both carry NOAA numbers as shown on SolarMonitor.

An easy facula is seen in the NE quadrant. High resolution SDOHMIc images show a couple of pores there but I cannot see them. I can barely see a large pore in the NW quadrant across the Central Longitudinal Meridian. It's associated with AR13146. SDOHMIc4K shows it to be a double-pore that I cannot resolve. The faculae of AR13140-45 can be seen right at the NW limb. If I didn't look for it I would have missed it!

AR13147 is noticed immediately by it's structured spot. An indention in it's penumbra is seen on it's NE side. Associated faculae are noticed to it's ESE. AR13148 is seen as a patch of faculae SSW of AR13147. Later in the session with the seeing improving a bit I could make out a single tiny dark pore within it at 50x. SDOHMI reveals that pore to be a close double but I could not resolve it.

I did not notice the granulation at all.

Carpe Lumen!

James

We are supposed to finally clear off on Saturday but with temps in the low 20's and brisk winds so I may take a peek out my front window!!

Lovely report thanks James, it's been raining all week here. It is supposed to clear over friday night, but clouds return saturday morning. I may get a sunoculars view if I am lucky. Have a great weekend buddy!

Thanks Mark. I hope you get at least enough sun to use those little Lunt Binos. They are often a session-saver in poor weather. You have a good weekend too. Sorry about your lost cat.

I'll try to keep everyone updated. Hopefully everyone affected by bad weather here will be out of it soon. I have noticed there have been fewer imaging posts lately. Also those north of 45 latitude have a really low Sun this time of year.
