Total solar eclipse 2024 April

Post by Radon86 »

Hi All,

Any one planning to go the USA for the total eclipse in ? April or is it March 2024 ??
Did any of you guys go to the eclipse in 2017 apart from Alexandra ?
Did you go on a tour or did you book your own, going to less expensive bed and breakfasts for accommodation ? I suppose there should be cheaper options in USA than in far away places like the Antarctic or Chile !

Oh I commented on the other post :)

For the 2017 eclipse we stayed at a hotel for the first few nights, then travelled around staying in B&Bs. There aren't that many B&Bs in the USA, we found just a few. We are not decided yet whether to go to around Niagara falls area, Ohio or Texas :)

Thanks Alexandra,
I tried to reply earlier but there was an error and I could not send the post.
I will try and do research on the sites and weather prospects/historical weather for the most suitable sites for total eclipse. Probably not Niagara Falls though !
I got an email from eclipse holidays (cannot remember names). Holidays next year in Australia in Melbourne or Perth for 5 days = 6000 Australian dollars (includes sight seeing).

I observed the 2017 total solar eclipse from my Dad's place in Lowndesville SC. He was in the path of totality. It made it REALLY easy!

A friend of mine and I plan to go to Big Bend National Part in Southern Texas to view the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse. The place also has some of the darkest skies in the country so we will take our 12" and 15" dobs as well. We plan to do a week. It all depends on money availability and how/when I move to my father's which is inevitable in the near future concerning his health. The eclipse trip is up in the air right now. I sure hope we get to go.

The consolidation prizes for the 2023 and 2024 eclipses are staying home and watching them as partial eclipses.

Wish me luck!

James

I have the best of both 2017 and 2024 (as long as it's not cloudy). The track of both eclipses cross one another in the southern part of my state, Illinois, so I am heading down to pretty much the same location that I watched the 2017 eclipse at.

Myself and my wife plan to head to Dallas and drive from there. We're reluctant to head to Mexico if I'm honest.
Past experience has taught us to keep an eye on the weather, stay in an AirBnB outside the path of totality near a good highway network, and hire a car.
This will be out 6th total solar eclipse trip.
Seen 4 totals out of 5 so far.

WoW, what a beautiful image. I'll never forget that eclipse. So beautiful. The first and only total one I have seen to date and the first time I ever saw a prominence. Now that is routine due the those magical etalons. But it's still the only time I have ever saw the corona.

Hi,
We're reluctant to head to Mexico if I'm honest.
Good decision ... Much too unsafe nowadays in Mexico ... and so far no change for good is in sight ...

Hi Astroshot/Michael,

What an incredible shot of the solar eclipse 2017 !!!

Fantastic capture !!

My only 1st person view was in Newquay in South West England in 1999 !! It was mostly cloudy, all I saw basically was the rapid movement of the shadow of the sun across the landscape (very fast) and the temperature changes (colder) and the birds behaviour!!!

Can you tell me where you are heading to see the eclipse, I am in the UK but am heading out next April and are wondering the best place to view would be?

That's a beautiful 2017 eclipse image, Michael. I saw it from my Dad's place just outside of Lowndesville SC. It was total there.

A very warm and sunny welcome Melliebox :hamster:

Unfortunately I don't think there is anywhere with a particularly good chance of seeing this eclipse. It seems most of the USA has a 50% chance of cloud. I think Texas gets to around 40% cloud risk and Mexico gets to about 30% cloud risk. Rainer has warned about safety issues in Mexico. It is a tough one!

I think you have a 50/50 chance anywhere really.

If I had the money I would go to Texas (Dallas) and enjoy the region, if I saw the eclipse it would be a bonus.

Hi Girls and Guys,

Below an image of the totality path of the Eclipse April 2024.

If you find a resort in any of these towns I would say it is more or less safe. That area except the pacific coast has really no real tourist attractions which would be worth seeing so the only reason to go there would be to watch the eclipse and enjoy the resort itself or the maybe available swimming pool.

There are not even prehistoric monuments. There is a lot of desert around.

I live in San Luis Potosi (center of Mexico) and there I will have a coverage of about 89.2%. Will try to get it with my H-alpha filter. Normally we have sunshine in April.

Hi all...

We have three couples going to a Resort in Mazatlan which is not far off the centre line. We will have a most of the week prior to the eclipse to vacation, and the big day is the day before out departure.

Clear skies to all where ever you choose to take it in.
