November 26th Ha Session

Post by MapleRidge »

Good day everyone...

I have had limited opportunity to do any solar work in the past few weeks due to both poor weather and busy work schedules, but did have clear skies on this past Saturday and took time to get out and do some observing and imaging. The clear skies were welcomed but the seeing was quite poor.

The disk had numerous features to concentrate efforts on, the first image posed is the full disk taken through the LS80T/LS75FHa/B1800Ha solar scope and the ASI1600MM camera with a 1.6x barlow. This is a composite of separate disk and limb images with the limb inverted:

My attempts to image features in greater detail were limited by the poor seeing, so I only collected images through the modded Orion EON 130 at prime focus, using the ASI290MM camera. The images below show the main AR's that were visible on the disk. I was only able to pull one mosaic together of the SE quadrant to show some of the larger scale details, but all attempts to do a mosaic of a larger area around the other regions did not work out:

There were also a number of smaller proms and fila-proms as well. Due to the seeing conditions imaging the proms was a a challenge and the 'better' of the captures are posted below:

This covers my 'best of' the captures from the 26th session. Sunday promises to be clear, so that will will be my next opportunity to image. I will have to get my new iOptron CEM70 mount setup on Saturday after work to be able to accomplish much ;)

These look absolutely great, Brian: you were able to manage beautifully the poor weather conditions and the results are excellent.

Pupak, Mark, Maurits, and Franco...

Thanks for your comments and feedback...always very much appreciated :bow

Mark we are under cloud and drizzle the past few days and temps are in low single digits (celcius). The month of November started off well above seasonal but turned below average 2 weeks ago and we had a couple of snow storms with around 8 inches of snow...we got off lucky as some places had feet of snow. Areas around Buffalo NY had 6 feet reported in some places...all due to lake effect snow. It warmed up here last weekend and melted it all.

Back to green grass or mud

Aaron and James...

Thanks for your comments on the session results :bow

James, it has not been overly cold but a lot of overcast skies. We did have a cold stretch for 10 days or so that brought a good snow cover but it has warmed up enough to melt it away and now 2.5 inches of rain this week has it wet and muddy. Below freezing this morning and the long term forecast is to be more seasonal with daytime highs in the low single digits and below freezing at night.

The cloud has limited my scope time, but after one of our managers quit in October I inherited part of the job so it is keeping me busier than normal in a time of year when we traditionally busy planning crop needs for next year. To top it off, I had an insulin pump setup up last Monday and spending time everyday with the nurse fine tuning the settings. It has been the first week in 47 years that I have not had to stop what I was doing and make insulin injections multiple times a day ;)

Brian,
It sounds like it’s been cloudy and busy for you. My mom had diabetes and had to take insulin. I feel for you. I know that sucks but I know that’s something you gotta do.

Nice images. 👍🏻. Seize the opportunity when you get a chance. 🔭.

James, in the end I'm still diabetic and have to eat right and look after everything I did before...just the injection are somewhat automated now. I little more freedom is what I'm expecting, but still have to get the settings fine tuned.

Brian,
I was noticing in your list of equipment an LS75Fha. I didn’t know Lunt made an LS75 scope or etalon. Hmm 🤔 I learn something new everyday.

Thanks Eric...always appreciated your feedback :bow

James, the front mount LS75 etalon was discontinued many years ago but I bought it in the early years of Lunt coming to the market. My original purpose was to use it on my 102mm, f10 refractor for higher resolution imaging, but after receiving the LS80T scope I switched it over as a double stack unit. The dedicated internal DSII etalon for this scope was used in my initial mod and it worked well enough to keep using in this configuration.

Brian,
Is it's quality better or worse than the Lunt stuff of today? Coronado was better in it's earlier pre-Meade days according to the people who have used the pre-Mead stuff.

James...

This is a hard one to answer since I don't have many duplicate bit of Lunt kit purchased over the years.

My first DSII etalon was form the early years that they were introduced, and I got a second on a few years ago to finish off my home brew DS pressure tuned modded scope. I'd say at least 10 years between the two manufacture dates and in my opinion the new one and older version are equally good. My 2 blocking filters were not more than a few years between my purchases.

It isn't much of an answer, but my experience with a limited number of samples. I would say that Lunt has not had a major change in management/manufacturing (that I am aware of), so they should be able to keep their standards more uniform. Again, my perspective...be it right or wrong ;)
