I remember viewing M101 back in 1985 when we still had really dark skies here using a friends 15" F4.1 dobsonian. I could see every HII region and star cloud in the face on galaxy. It gave an almost photographic view. I'll never forget it.

Pedro,
How dark are your skies? Your pics seem to suggest they are quite dark.

NoiseXTerminator – The best noise reduction plug-in hands down

DIGITAL IMAGE PROCESSING TUTORIALS | Pedro RE'
DEEP-SKY IMAGING | TMB175 F/8 | SBIG STL11000 (M51)
RC-ASTRO NoiseXTerminator (Photoshop Plug-in)
http://pedroreastrophotography.com/

NoiseXTerminator is a fast and easy-to-use AI-powered noise reduction tool specifically for astrophotography. While powerful AI-based noise reduction and detail enhancement solutions exist for general photography, they were not trained on astrophotos. As a result, they often mangle the stars and invent detail that simply isn't there.
NoiseXTerminator was trained exclusively on deep-sky astrophotos, so its neural network is "familiar" with how stars should look and the types of detail we see in our photos. It can perform natural detail enhancement without boosting noise or inventing non-existent structure.
NoiseXTerminator is available as a plug-in for both PixInsight and Photoshop. The Photoshop version also works with Affinity Photo.

• In Photoshop, you can select a small area of the image and quickly evaluate different NoiseXTerminator settings. Use "undo" to revert a change to the selected area.
• The "Denoise" parameter literally determines the fraction of what the neural network identifies as noise will be removed from the image – setting it to 1.00 will tell NoiseXTerminator to try to remove 100% of the noise from the image. As with all noise reduction solutions, completely removing the noise can result in an artificially-clean image with a "waxy" appearance. This a matter of taste, of course, but try setting the Denoise parameter to a slightly lower value (e.g., between 0.75 and 0.90) to retain some noise for a more natural appearance.
• The "Detail" parameter acts much like controlling the radius of an unsharp masking operation, but it is noise-aware. It can sharpen details in the presence of noise, and without boosting it. In general, the best value for Detail is a bit lower than a value that produces dark halos around small stars.

Yes, it works well with H-alpha solar images. Mainly proms, it's not great for surface details. Check out the images below

Pedro,
M22 is among my favorite globulars. I have fond memories seeing it for the first time using my old 10x50 Traq binoculars and 50mm Focal refractor back in the summer of 1982. It would appear brighter I think than M13 or M5 and is certainly a bit larger in apparent size than either two if it was higher in the sky at my latitude.

Nice DS work Pedro. As good as your solar work is I think your DS stuff is even better. And WoW what a refractor.

Pedro,
That’s one of the most beautiful images I have seen of M42, amateur or professional. That refractor does very nicely and your processing skills are to be admired.

One of my best views of any galaxy was of M101 back in 1985 through a friend’s 15” F4.1 classic Dobsonian. We had nice dark skies back then and I remember the galaxy looking like a pale version of what you see/do in images. I could visually see nearly all the HII regions and star clouds. It was awesome. I’ll never forget that view. Though rebuilt my friend still has that scope.

Excellent images Pedro!!

James.

M33!! Years back I used my Coulter 10.1" and my friends 15" dobsonian to find and identify many of the HII regions and star clouds in the galaxy visually. That was back when we had much darker skies. I had always intended to search for the system's globulars but never got around to it. They would be stellar or near so in appearance. And faint!

I did find Mayall II which belongs to M31. It was a tiny faint fuzzball appearing as an out of focus star near two other dim stars. I remember having to use high magnification to pin it down. This was with the 10.1" under rural skies.

Awesome and thank You Pedro. I'll have to consult my records and see how many of these I have found. Certainly not near all of them! I'll save this image as well for future use. Now mostly for use with Slooh but when I move to my Dad's I will have much darker skies to probe M33. I can see a few from my house at the current time with my 10.1" and 12" dobs with NGC-604 being the easiest.

Is this image yours?

Pedro,
Keep posting your deep sky stuff. After I move to Lowndesville S.C. around years end they will be of considerable use to me. I will have much darker nighttime skies there!

Thanks
