Hi Stuart !

I love your solarcan result ! Can you explain the original scan please ? Are the dark lines across the sky the solar images ? And the white foreground the landscape etc ?

It looks like you missed the highest parts of the path of the sun in the summer - what do you think you could have done to capture the top of the sun's path ?

n.b. Can I try and process your original/raw .jpg file for practice ?? I can publish here if its any good.

Thanks.

Magnus.

Hi Magnus,
Thank you for your comments.

You are correct about the dark lines/white foreground :)
To image the highest parts, the can could have been tilted or a replacement hole could have been made higher up the can (challenging to make an appropriately small hole).
Perfectly happy for you to process my original.

I may get another solarcan, though, and do it again. :) It is fun !

Oh Franco this is fantastic!
I think your processing looks lovely. An alternative would be to keep the stone path in the foreground in your image because I think the way it mirrors the trail of the sun is wonderfully artistic! I would love to catch something like that!
I put two cans up: one was stolen and one was crushed so I’m going to try to salvage something from the crushed can to share!
Well done
Nic

Thank you Warren, Maurits and Nic for your nice comments. Nic: you have experience with this. The top of the path is cutoff: is it because the camera was hung too high ? Should I position the next one lower ? Any suggestions are welcome.

It is the angle of tilt of the can and not the height from the ground which is important. So you can sit the can on the ground and tilt it 30-45° depending on where the pinhole is. If the pinhole is central then I tilt nearer 45°
It is very hard to get interesting foreground detail and at the same time catch the highest trail in mid summer!
This is why it becomes addictive!

Nic, that is truly disappointing, I was just watching a train cam this morning going to Hull and someone put a stick deliberately across the line to make the train jump, why do people do these things :(

I put two cans up: one was stolen and one was crushed so I’m going to try to salvage something from the crushed can to share!

[/quote]

NO! :o ...That's so disappointing, Nic. I hope the crushed one gives you something interesting.

Maybe they stupidly thought they contained beer.

Thank you Nic for the inclination tip, thank you Alexandra for the encouragement and the totally unexpected SPOD. I really like your processing of the image, Alexandra, glad you kept the whole frame and made everything in the image very visible. Stu: love your interpretation of the image, it is very artistic, very nicely framed and beautifully colored. I will keep both yours and Alexandra's as reference images.

Thankfully the upper two thirds of the solargraph from the crushed can is really lovely and I’m still newly navigating photoshop to decide how to show the lower affected third! The hilarious prankster had removed my Solarcan and replaced it with a tango can so I’ve apparently been ‘tangoed’ (as per UK TV advertising campaign!) it’s part funny and part frustrating as it had the potential to be a cracking image… never mind, onwards and upwards like the morning sun!

OK, I could go on forever tinkering with colours etc. I had three Solarcans on all 3 drainpipes round the house. One East, South and West. I had three Solarcan colours Nebula, Atlantis and Eldorado. Nebula would not scan, I scanned 3 times and it came out totally black despite the preview being fine. The only way I could scan it was to put an image of a hedgehog behind????

Here are my assortment

ImageNebula 01 West by Alexandra Hart, on Flickr

ImageNebula Eldorado combined by Alexandra Hart, on Flickr

ImageAtlantis 01 South by Alexandra Hart, on Flickr

ImageAtlantis South reflection by Alexandra Hart, on Flickr

ImageAtlantis 02 South by Alexandra Hart, on Flickr

ImageEldorado East by Alexandra Hart, on Flickr

I'll reduce the size of the originals and add next.

Franco...

Great image and congrats on the SPoD :bow

First attempts are always a challenge...it will be interesting to see how mine turns out tonight when I can get around to scanning it. All of the re-worked versions each add a different flavour to the image...all are good.

Hi Alexandra...

Your assortment of images all look great :bow Odd you had to put the hedgehog in to get the Nebula paper to scan properly. Nicely doen!

And now for something completely different...Mmmm, hedgehog...reminds of a Monty Python skit...Dinsdale,Dinsdale

Re: December Solar Challenge

Post by MapleRidge »

Hi everyone...

I finally had some free time this evening to open my Solarcan, scan the paper and see what I managed to record ;)

I was very happy with the results in general...orientation of the pinhole was pretty much centered on the south and the fence-rows and hydro transmission towers show up quite well too. The can was mounted on June 21st and taken down on Dec 22nd, so I managed to catch the full six month trek of our star across the sky. I was surprised as to how much to the solar arc extended off the upper margin of the paper. I'm thinking the next can needs to be tilted up around 20 degrees or so...any suggestions would be most welcome. There are also many small spots on the scanned image...water-spots perhaps?

The pic below shows where I mounted the can on June 21st. I placed it on the utility pole south of the observatories and put it high enough that the crop of corn in the filed to the south of the property didn't block the sun. That seems to have worked ;)

I played around in Photoshop trying many different settings, some following the suggestions for the solarcan website too.

The first is the raw image off the scanner:

Solarcan_Raw2.jpg (1.01 MiB) Viewed 1188 times
The next is the inverted raw image:
Solarcan_Inverted.jpg
Solarcan_Inverted.jpg (1.26 MiB) Viewed 1188 times
The next three are what I settled on as some of my preferred versions...the lower portion of the frame was cropped out for these. First gives a moiore natural to the landscape:
Solarcan - Cropped.jpg
Solarcan - Cropped.jpg (930.99 KiB) Viewed 1188 times
This next version has a more yellow/red enhancement of the suns path:
Solarcan - Cropped-enhanced.jpg

And the last is a monochrome version:
Solarcan - Cropped-Mono.jpg

Feel free to process and see what variations anyone can come up with.

Once the new solarcan arrives I will be setting it up to catch the progression of winter into summer. Suggestions to improve the coverage of the upper arcs would be much appreciated.

Excellent results, Brian. I had spots on mine too. Interesting that some darken on the tracks, suggesting they are transparent and concentrate the light. Maybe they are water droplets. There’s probably a bit of dust too.

As for orientation, my thought is to point the can south (for us in the north), tipped up in the direction of the ecliptic, so the axis of the can runs parallel to Earth’s spin axis. The challenge then might be to keep the rain from entering the hole. Maybe a piece of a PET bottle could be used as a protective cover?

Brian, you images look fabulous to me. I really like how the arc is centered In the image: the different colorings also show well what can be done with the image. I assume this is your first solarcan, just like for me. Definitely a lot of fun: I just ordered a second one. Now the challenge is to improve the result. :bow :bow

Warren, Stuart, and Franco...

Thanks for your feedback on the solar can results...much appreciated :bow

Franco, this is my first attempt so it gives a base to work form for improvements. Stuart, I was thinking of the water ingress potential if the can was tilted much and wonder how much a rain shield (like an awning above the hole) could block the sun when you consider how wide the field of view is. Something to think about while I await the second can.
