Sunlit, Full map and Animated rotation of Mars, 27 Oct to 25 Nov 2022

Post by H-Alpha »

Hi all,

I hope this finds you all well.

I have the pleasure to share with you what I have promised some two weeks ago. :-)
Three days ago I completed the FULL MAP of Mars. The map is composed by 15 captures acquired during the last month.
I will try to keep capturing Mars during and after the opposition for a while, hoping to further improve this map, but I think it is already good enough to present.

I did not upload the Hi-Res (1600x1600) of the rotating Mars due to its large size, so this is a 700x700 version:

I hope you like them and you can enjoy them.

Best wishes,
Alexandros

WoW, incredible!! It looks like a professional map and animation. I got Olympus Mons in my 6”F8 years ago among other surface features. Good but not this well. The C14 Edge HD rules!

😳 👍🏻👍🏻

James

P.S. I would love to see the full-rez version.

That is really incredible and awesome Alexandros: a little masterpiece of amateur astronomy !

The seeing must have been excellent: what scope and setup did you use ? Oops I just saw it marked at the bottom of the image.

Dear Franco, surprisingly, the seeing was not good! I was capturing Jupiter a few hours before Mars every time I had planned a capture, and judging from this I can say the seeing was perhaps 1-2 time average/good in about 20 captures. Never good and the majority of the times the seeing was poor or average/poor. Then the question that arise is why Mars appears so well despite the bad seeing? I have discussed this with fellow astronomers and the reason seems to be due to two factors:

1) In my latitude, Mars was/is reaching very high altitudes of >75 degrees (max 77 the last weeks), and therefore there is much much less atmosphere between me and the planet, which likely makes the seeing affecting less the quality of the final image.
2) It also seems that given that Mars is a solid planet with high reflection/contrast (in comparison to the gas giants), is somewhat more resilient to bad seeing.

Of course another reason is that with Mars, having a very small ROI, the FPS can reach 200, and therefore lucky imaging works at its best. We can easily have 15000 frames per capture and stack just the 2000-3000 best for a good result.

Both reasons seem reasonable to me. I was positively surprised by the result, because at some point I was afraid that November's (bad) seeing would not have allowed me to complete a nice map.

Best wishes,
Alexandros
