Chapter 2 of Idea of a Cooling Aid assistance for cameras

Post by rsfoto »

NO Sun imaging as the Pam trees are paying their toll ... :(

Hi,

Here is version 2 of the cooling assistance for 62mm Ø ZWO cameras.

At the moment heating up the camera with everything mounted but 50mm fan not running. Waiting that the temperature stabilizes. BTW they need quite a long time to get to its maximum temperature.

In about 1-2 hours I will report if succesful or not ...

ZWO ASI 120MM running at 173.4fps with a roi of 320x240

Hi,

OK, after nearly one hour of blowing the air into the manifold not much happened and so I decalre this test #! as a FAIL

I changed now the fan direction and I am sucking the air through the manifold. Let us what happens.

You're having fun with your 3D printing Rainer. I enjoy watching your experiments.

Hi,

Second test with sucking fan

FAIL

OK, this manifold design goes into the trash bin and the one shown in Martin's post, hetsink, will be redesigned for a 50mm fan.

Hi Mark,

Yes it is fun and apart from that learning new design tricks and so on.

If i can find a fan that can work by USB and it has exactly same spacing of screws as on the back of those ZWO non cooled cameras i will give it a try, i don't have any 3D printers or DIY tools.

Hi,

OK, using the Camera ribs with my badly designed manifold had no success neither blowing or sucking.

Here is another Heatsink design with a 50mm fan. On the right you see the 40mm fan version.

Cooling efficiency is at the moment from 30°C down to 25°C at an ambient temperature of around 20.5°C.

Will it cool better bu sucking the air ? Need to test it.

Hi Rainer, I found the best setup for cooling on my original camera cooler was a fan blowing into the heatsink and using a 12volt Peltier module at 5 volts. Running a 12 volt Peltier at 12 volts needs a large heatsink to dissipate all that heat.

I found that passive cooling did not work as you need to chill the camera casing.

I've been doing more testing on my phone cooler mod.
I can produce condensation on the Aluminium plate after about 30 mins on my test bench, but not outside in the sun.

Insulating the camera body might be an option as isolating the camera body from the ambient heat outside, means that the cooling module is drawing heat only from the camera body and not the ambient air around the camera.
I'll continue my experiments in a few days time as we are spending quality time with our two granddaughters as they stay over with us for a few days during the school holidays.

Hi Martin,

There are two ways to do things

One is the simple and the other one is the complicated

Isolating the whole camera body could bring, at least I think, the problem of icing the chip inside the chamber ... ¿? as this cameras do not have a sealed chamber nor desiccant inside the body.

Worth a test

Hi Rainer, it sure is. Even with my Peltier cooler I never got the camera cold enough to cause condensation in the outside heat. It might be a different scenario in colder climates. Where I am in Brisbane , Australia, the daytime temperature rarely drops below 12 degree's Celsius, so internal condensation may not be an issue.

I can now get condensation after 15 mins inside on my desk, if you look carefully you can see where I have wiped it off.

ZWO use a combination of 2 Peltier modules in their cooled cameras.

So they do have a peltier element installed ? Interesting ...

Hi Rainer, here's another image of my phone cooler that I use on my ASI cameras this was taken around 7am while I was waiting for a gap in the clouds.

Hi Mark, I've been testing mine in the Australian sun all summer, on an average of 2.5 hrs a day.
The chip temperature holds steady at around 40 degrees Celsius in a ASI174 camera .These run hotter than ASI290 cameras.
Even after 2.5 hours the camera body is cool to touch.

The good thing is you can buy extra magnetic pads cheaply on AliExpress and swap the coolers between cameras.
