December 7 2022. SUNocular Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Just after 17:00 UTC I get a very brief view of the Sun using the Lunt 8x32 SUNoculars. The sky is 95 percent overcast. The temperature is 64F ( 17.7C ). 20 minutes later the sky has completely clouded over and later it starts to rain.

I could see the spots of ARs 13157, 13156 and 13160 in the NE quadrant. AR13156 is easy in the south-central part of the disc. The westernmost spot is quite large and a braced close look shows that the spot is darker in the middle!! The easternmost spot is smaller but still easy.

It clouded back up rapidly before I could study the disc for AR13155 in the NW. If should have been visible too with a close look as a single spot.

I am home today with my wife who had surgery yesterday plus I have developed a bad cold.

Good solaring everyone.

James

Thanks and you are welcome, Peter.

You are welcome Aaron. It looks like I will be fighting clouds for the next 3-4 days. This is the longest cloudy spell I have had in awhile. What Mars event?

This cold is one of the worst I have had in awhile. Coughing, sore throat and weakness. No fever though. My wife has actually done better today than I have!!

Thanks for the report James, there is plenty to see from a sunocular perspective. I've just watched the disappearance of mars at the start of the occultation with the 10x42s, it was nice to see and surprised me how large mars was. Just having a coffee and in half an hour will watch it re-appear again.

I could have not observed Mars being occulted by the moon if I wanted to. Completely cloudy. Hopefully someone here is imaging it.

And Mark, one of the spots is surprisingly large in the Lunt Sunnys. Any bigger and one could pick out the umbra and penumbra with a close steady look.

Thanks and welcomes everyone. With this cough I just hope I can sleep. Goodnight.

Alexandra,
I am afraid to get close to her. She had a nasal/sinus procedure done and I have an upper respiratory nose/throat thing going on. Not something I want her to get. It could compromise her healing. What a time for me to catch this!!

Maurits,
You are welcome. I did get a bit of a white light session today through thin very brief cloud gaps. It's overcast now and raining again. I'll post it shortly. I am home again today and I am about out of personal/sick time to take at work :-(
