1-13-23 SUNocular WL and Slooh Ha.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

My SUNocular white light session took place around 17:30 UTC for about 8 minutes or so. The skies are mostly cloudy and the temperature is a cool 40F ( 4.4C ) after yesterday evening's strong front with heavy rain and thunderstorms moved through. We had a significant amount of marble sized hail with these storms. Today is 10F colder than yesterday midday 50F was before the frontal passage.

Amazingly I can get six sunspot active regions on the WLC solar disc using the little Lunt 8x32 WL SUNoculars. Three in the Northern Hemisphere with two of these being numbered on the KSO images. I can see three regions in the southern hemisphere with two of these being numbered on the KSO images. The SE limb shows a large new sunspot!!

A new unnumbered group is seen close to the NE limb. It was the last spots I found during the short session. Four spots are shown on the full sized GONG WLAI image but I can only see two here. AR13186 is well NE of the new active region but is still in the NE quad, shows itself as three spots. A larger lead spot with another that appears to be in contact with the SE side of the bigger spot. Full sized images from GONG WLAI shows a small gap between them. Another spot lies to the ENE of the large lead spot. A tiny spot can be seen in the NW quadrant nearing the limb. It belongs to AR13185.

AR13182 can be seen as two spots in the SW quadrant with the small spot being seen just to the NE of the bigger one. AR13184 shows itself as two " snakeye " spots with a more difficult spot just to the ESE. A new large spot is seen just inside the eastern limb. Even at the very low magnification of 8x this spot looks of significant size and is very easy to see. If it maintains this size once it gets more onto the disc I might be able to glimpse the umbra-penumbra form of this spot in the Sunnys!! This spot at this time has not been given an NOAA number.

I also logged into Slooh for a short session and captured a couple of images from their Teide Canary5 Lunt 60 Ha telescope. One of the images shows some flaring in AR13184.

Tomorrow I go to my Dad's in Lowndesville SC. I will take my scopes and SUNoculars with me.

Today’s session music was Her Infinite Variety, Celtic Women in Music and Song by Green Linnet Records

Happy Friday!! :hamster:

Thanks and welcomes everyone. :-)

Warren,
That's some large sleet. Most here is rice grain sized.

Great report James :hamster: only some sunshine very late in the day here as the Sun was setting. So we had a lovely walk along the river instead :)

A river walk sounds so relaxing Alexandra. Hopefully it's not too cold there.
