A few solar images taken last week 2023.01.12

Post by MichaelTeoh »

Finally I have some time to process them after being away for almost one week. This is only the second time I used a color camera for solar imaging (previously a SvBony). As my old QHY5L-II-M is dead, I am happy to use any camera I have, this one being a QHY5III178C borrowed from my friend Alex. As I am not too familiar with a color camera, I had some difficulty during imaging. Due to some rustiness as the previous solar session was almost four months ago, more than half of the captured images are of poor quality. Lucky to have at least a few that are relatively good.

What James said! Boy the disk looks a bit barren since that big filament lifted off.

Thanks Peter and Warren. Too bad I have no chance to capture the huge AR3190.

Thanks Franco. Having no camera for the past 4 months making me so itchy seeing so many sunspots and solar flares come and go. Hopefully the weather will be good for the next two months, because I’ll be moving back to my hometown in March, so the access to the observatory will be limited to weekends only.

Agree with everyone, the first 540nm image is excellent - love the detail and granulation.

Michael,
You've obviously changed the colors from what the color camera actually shows. You did very well with it. The 540nm image turned out especially good!

Thanks James.

I converted the stacked color result into mono before further processing. So from the Registax step onwards, the workflow is the same as dealing with actual mono image from a mono camera.

Back in 2014, I was leading my students to do full disk imaging using a DSLR. I experimented that processing the color image with or without converting it to mono yielded the same result. But by converting it to mono first, it’s easier to work with (to the eyes) as I don’t get “distracted” by the color tint.

Thanks Stu. The seeing was momentarily good for a few minutes. Couldn’t be happier with the result.
